A college education is an essential step towards a successful military career. To some enlisted members, continuing or starting a college education may seem difficult to do. My decision to continue a college education was easy. Being stationed at an Air Base for a year has given me an opportunity to do so without being sidetracked by some of life’s daily responsibilities. Since it is an unaccompanied tour and I have no choice but to live in dorms, going to college is much easier then back in the states. Being stationed here has given me great opportunity to dedicate all my free time towards a college degree. After going to the Education Center I was very pleased. Right now the Air Force will pay one hundred percent of my college tuition fees. So the first thing I did was set a goal. I planned to start small; first working towards my Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) degree. The CCAF is the only degree-granting institution of higher learning in the world dedicated exclusively to enlisted people (The Insider: Air Force Education Programs, par. 4). A CCAF degree, which is equal to an associate degree, helps in numerous ways. Many Air Force special duty assignments require enlisted members to have a CCAF degree. For example, to become a Military Training Instructor or T.I., the member applying is required to have a CCAF degree. The path towards a college degree may be challenging; however, the rewards seem to be endless.
Throughout my life, I have always put forth tremendous effort in my education. My strong work ethic kept my grades high. As a student who understands hard work and persistence, it is an aspiration of mine to represent something greater. During my time at community college, I was at a slight disadvantage compared to the majority of my classmates that had a strong background in programming and math during high school. The high school I attended did not prepare me as much for my intended major. There were not as many clubs and advance placement classes related to the STEM field. Therefore, the only preparation I had related to my major was Precalculus and a web design course. Moreover, the grading system in high school was very different than college. In college, exams are weighted more than assignments and every class requires hours of studying. My entire educational background has prepared me for my next goal: to obtain my master’s degree in environmental engineering. After graduating from high school I got accepted into Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. While at Cincinnati State, I took a wide verity of engineering courses like Geographic Information Systems, Surveying and Drafting, and Fluid Dynamics as well as Environmental courses like Environmental Sampling, Regulations and Permits, and Water and Wastewater Treatment Control. Although I only obtained my associates degree from Cincinnati State, I took extra math courses like pre-calculus to help prepare me to further my education. After graduating from Cincinnati State, I then transferred to Shawnee State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering Technology. Shawnee helped me expand my knowledge and I took engineering courses like thermodynamics, toxicology, and Into to Electricity/Electronics. Attending Shawnee State University prepped for the working world and gave me opportunities for entry level employment.

The multitudes of extracurricular and academic activities I participate in were chosen because of their focus on my interests. I want to pursue a career in computer engineering and/or biological engineering. In order to help me accomplish this I carefully consider how extracurricular and academic activities will assist me in the future. Currently I am participating in several rigorous academic courses such as AP Physics C and AP Calculus BC to gear me towards a college environment, as well as a variety of clubs that focus on engineering and the sciences. A vast majority of the classes I take are advanced placement, which gives me the chance to obtain college credit before entering college. Advance placement classes also challenge me with faster paced instruction, which prepare me for the speed and difficulty of college level courses. I am currently taking AP Biology, AP Computer Science A, , AP Literature and Composition, AP U.S. Government and Politics, Pre-AP Chinese IV, and Honors Independent Research. In terms of extracurricular activities, I currently participate in the Stock Market Club, Science and Engineering Club, our school’s FRC team, and Chinese Club. In my free time I enjoy building computers, putting together parts lists for computers, programming, playing video games, and learning about various technical jobs and new computing technologies such as server administrator and quantum computing.
My journey as a student has always been focused on the path to college and success. Before I even set foot in kindergarten my mother, a college dropout, always told me that “honor roll wasn’t an option” and that I would be attending college in the future and achieving a degree. Most of the time I made these requirements. Most of the time I was awarded honor roll or had a newly edited list of colleges to attend, but sometimes life got in the way of my dreams of achieving success.
