Muslim Immigration into the United States
Introduction
A current American dilemma is that the people in war torn countries want to seek refuge in the United States, and because America is considered the “melting pot”, we want to help them (allusion). However, Americans want protection, and due to the recent uprising in terrorism, we are unsure of whether or not to allow them access. Muslim immigration into the United States has become a more prevalent issue now than in previous years due to ISIS and the rise of terrorism. In discussions of Muslim immigration, a controversial issue is that if we allow Muslims in, we are inviting terrorists. The rise in terrorism has aided in “blurring the lines between Islam as an ideology, Islam as a religion, and Muslims themselves” (El-Gamal). Not all Muslims present themselves as a terrorist, or agree completely with Sharia law, but people still stereotype Muslims as extremists. Muslim-Americans also felt agonized with the 9/11 attacks; they felt as though their faith had been perceived incorrectly. Because of this event, Muslims initiated blood drives, donations, etc. in their communities (Uddin). Our society automatically associates Muslims with terrorists;we assume that they all desire to inflict harm on our country. Muslim immigration into America matters because American safety is at stake. The United States should take a hiatus from Muslim immigration, and immigration in general, because we are not completely ready to accept immigrants yet. Bringing such an extreme change to our society is ill advised, as it could cause many problems that could have been avoided. Primarily, we should have a 100% accurate screening process. Although at some point we would have to accept immigrants to test its accuracy, now is not the time. If we do not take a break from immigration, our country could become as war torn as the Middle
