The screechy, scratching sound of the violin, the goose-like honk of the clarinet, and the thumping raucous of the drums are all sounds of an aspiring musician learning to play a musical instrument for the first time. I believe everyone should learn how to play a musical instrument. Nowadays, people tend to want to partake in activities that provide instant gratification rather than undertaking tasks that require discipline but yield long-term benefits. I think that some people do not want to play a musical instrument because they think it is too difficult or too costly. First, a lot of discipline can be gained by playing a musical instrument. To get better at an instrument, people must practice consistently and train themselves to focus (Estrella). Johann Sebastian Bach, an illustrious classical music composer, said, “What I have achieved by industry and practice, anyone else with [a] tolerable natural gift and ability can also achieve” (“Johann Sebastian Bach > Quotes”). Next, people can also learn how to be creative when playing a musical instrument. Music helps both sides of the brain communicate and connect; when this happens, the brain exercises creativity (Martino). When one uses both hands to play an instrument or even just casually tinkers around on a musical instrument, studies have shown that the brain is making synapses or connections, hence, increasing one’s level of creativity (Martino). Some people say that playing an instrument is boring and takes too much time, but it can be very exciting to learn. Therefore, as musicians play more and more, music becomes easier and more entertaining; people experience a big sense of achievement when they are finally able to master a song or finish a recital (Estrella). Some people also say that playing a musical instrument is expensive, but the price is definitely worth it. If one keeps practicing and working diligently, playing an instrument will become more enjoyable, and besides, you can even play an instrument to earn money.
