If I Were A Boy by Beyoncé: Awareness of Gender Stereotype
When I think about living in the hypothetical world such as If I were a bird, rich, or president, I usually imagine about it with my wish, hope, and favorable expectation. In her music video, “If I Were A Boy”, Beyoncé acts like a man and behaves in the way she thinks what is like being a man. It reveals gender stereotype that we may have subconsciously, while also implying her hope for women to be strong and positive beyond the gender stereotype.
We have more or less gender stereotype and create our own set of standards how men and women are supposed to behave. The music video delivers a weird impression that something is wrong with the story because the characters in the video are acting opposite from society’s expectations of gender stereotype. The video portrays a couple’s normal daily life, which may have been seen everywhere, and it’s nothing special except that the perspectives of males and females are opposite from what we would expect. Beyoncé has been singing about women’s independence since she was in the hit group “Destiny’s Child”. Many of her songs support women’s lifestyle and keep cheering up girls with her powerful and expressive vocals (Armstrong). In addition to her songs and lyrics, her beautiful appearance fascinates many female audiences and influences from teenagers to grown-ups as if she was a role model. The filming took place in Los Angeles, but features references to Hurricane Katrina, with Beyoncé on top of a police car in a flooded street and later cuts to a man holding a newspaper with Martin Luther King Jr.’s face on it with the title “The Truth”. Later a young hooded boy dances in front of a line of police officers with their hands up before the video cuts to a graffitied wall with the words “stop shooting us “ tagged on it, at the end of the video the police car sunk with her on top. Not only did this song, bring awareness to the 10th anniversary of hurricane Katrina it also brought awareness to police brutality, racism, and the “black lives matter movement”. I stand with Lil Wayne, Beyoncé, the people of New Orleans and the countless others who are pushing for a change in the way minorities and the lower class citizen are treated.
The whole music video is in remembrance of the little girl Aiyana Jones and to show its audience the injustice it served in America (Alexis 5). The music video does not focus on the lyrics, but focuses on a whole different story. Although the music video is about the war between the government and drugs, the lyrics and the music video share a mutual message and that is to seek peace not only in the community, but also in our minds. Trina’s intent was to create a song that liberated women from the double standards and stereotypical views placed upon them. Her song however can cause harm to young women that listen to take this song to heart. Instead of liberation, we are moved further down into the hole of degrading and devaluing women. Trina should’ve sent the message that these things were wrong. Instead she endorsed and encouraged them.

The delayed assistance in New Orleans by the U.S. government stirred some controversy that led many to question how much America really cares about its black communities. Nonetheless, Beyoncé’s video is full of imagery that is associated with black culture, including historical references to black communities in the south. But what is really important about “Formation” are the lyrics. With lyrics like “My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana, You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas Bama” and “I like my baby hair with baby hair and afros, I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils,” Beyoncé is undoubtedly declaring her pride for her blackness as well as defending her child Blue Ivy who has always been scrutinized for the way her hair looked. Thus, this song is obviously geared toward the Black community which is obvious due to the lyrics and the imagery in the music video. To put it plainly, this song is a proclamation of Black pride and shouldn’t be thought of in any other way. However, after performing it at the Super Bowl people of other ethnicities became aware of the song and became offended by her performance as well as the lyrics. There are people who have the special talent of making others relate to their emotions, thoughts, or ideas by creating music. In current society most artists decide to create videos to make their lyrics visual for their listeners and to earn more profit. The negative thing about the creation of music videos is the way in which females are stereotyped. In a lot of music videos, especially hip-hop/rap, females are portrayed in a negative way, which causes a harmful influence on the people who view them.
In the documentary Dreamworlds 3, popular music videos are examined. The documentary includes multiple videos portraying women in little clothing, stripping, and dancing on other men or the main singer. There is nothing wrong with a woman controlling her sexuality and expressing herself however she chooses, but these videos create a different narrative. The documentary shows an attack on women in Central Park, NYC in 2000 who were sexually assaulted, dosed in water and stripped of their clothes. This imagery is shocking, but it has been seen time and time again in music videos. It is made very clear early in the video that Beyoncé's focus of the video is to promote feminism and female empowerment, but ultimately Beyoncé fails at this.
