Music plays a vital role in the making of any movie. A good background score can enhance the vibe of a film. Imagine a movie without a fitting background score and the entire movie would fall out of place. Music, in the Indian film industry has a bigger role to play than in any other film industry. Music is also what generates a lot of revenue for the makers and it has an entertainment value which has remained unmatched by any other industry in the world. From our traditional forms of classical music to a more recent trend of fusion between classical and electronic music, the Indian film industry welcomes these changes and incorporates them with their story telling styles.

Since music is such a big part of our culture, it most definitely finds a way into our cinema. A movie without background music is like eating food without being able to taste or smell it. Without music, there is a complete lack of essence thus making the product seem incomplete.
In north India, Hindustani Classical is mostly practiced by classical musicians while down in the south, there is a major influence of Carnatic Music. Hindustani and Carnatic music define Indian classical music and have been influencing songs in movies since then. In South India, there is a trend of musical education and is taken seriously by many over there.
Rahman’s work employs the use of various classical techniques and instruments. Classical motifs in songs such as ‘Narumugaye’ (from Iruvar) and many others made use of some of the best classical vocalists in the south like Unnikrishnan, Bombay Jayashri, Nithyashree Mahadevan and Kalyani Menon. Music for movies like Sangamam and Iruvar used a combination of Carnatic classical with Western music like using the veena with leads of rock and jazz.
