In Edgar Allan Poe’s short detective story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, to be surprised, the murderer is an orang-outang, which proves animals are wild, violent and uncontrollable. The author Poe presents quality of the animality action mostly as wild and unexpected of human nature. Therefore, animality refers to behavior associated with scary animal creatures. However, despite some writings that seem impossible, Poe believes in highlighting the reality of human behavior in most of his literature works. Where the character would contradict Poe’s belief on human behavior, he uses an animal character instead to emphasize on it. “The furniture broken and thrown about in all directions. There was only one bedstead; and from this the bed had been removed, and thrown into the middle of the floor,” the description illustrates that animal behavior is destructive and far from madness. The spread of blood all the floor and on the wall suggest that the offender was enjoying what he was doing. The extent of the excitement of whoever spills blood furthermore keeps a reader in wonder. Surely, it is not of human nature to create excess damage, which presented in the story. “thick tresses of grey human hair” shows that the scene was crazy for it is not common for people to pull out each other’s hair from the root. Poe uses a superhero detective, as the illustration that what people do to each other to the society are not the standard of human morals and nature. The madness of the animal could be a symbol of drugs and substances that people use to take chaotic actions, such as against robbery and murder. I am certain Poe uses an animal as a symbol, for people who have to force out human nature in them in preparation for mischief and creation of fear. Poe made the Animality theme so peculiar that he even uses an animal as a character.
