The setting in Possibility of Evil wasn’t clear and wasn’t given to the reader directly. You’ll have to infer a lot of the description of the setting by the dialogue and narration. The physical setting, the place was Mrs.Strangeworth’s town, mainly her house; which was surrounded by her beloved roses. The story takes place in a old-fashioned town in 1930s-1950s. We know this because Mrs.Strangeworth asked Billy, why he isn’t riding in his dad’s brand-new car. Which allows us to infer that cars were around, and rules out any year earlier than the 1930s. We also know that there weren’t any television during the time of the story because she listened to a late-night news broadcast and kids play outside; for real though, kids don’t do that anymore! It was also quite possible that Mrs.Strangeworth’s town was a tourist’s attraction; Or it has a darker history, possibly Belgium during WWII, and Mrs.Strangeworth is just trying to keep everyone in line to protect them. We can infer that from this description “The sun was shining, the air was fresh and clear after the night’s heavy rain, and everything in Miss Strangeworth’s little town looked washed and bright.” We also know that the town is very small, and it consists of Mrs.Strangeworth house, a postal office, a church, a high-school, a convenience store, a police station, a fire hall, a cafe, a candy store, and the homes of Mrs.Strangeworth’s fellow neighbours. The short-story takes place over the time span of two days; from early morning to late at night, and the next morning. We know it was summer time when the story took place because Mrs.Strangeworth’s roses were fully bloomed, also, because the “Sun was shining, the air was fresh and clean.” Another clue is that children were outside playing together because if it wasn’t during the summer time, the kids would be in
