When my sister and I were younger, we dreamed of moving to Australia, owning an opal mine, and raising kangaroos. In second grade, I mailed a paper Flat Stanley to Australia and was so jealous of his adventures that I tried to mail myself there. I still dream of traveling to Australia to experience the unique landscapes, animals, and culture.
My trip will begin with a flight to Sydney where I will embrace the tourist spirit. The word “tourist” harbors a negative connotation, but I relish being a tourist.Tourists look with unbridled joy at details locals see everyday. I would love to volunteer with WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) which would cover my room and board, increase my time abroad, and give me farming experience and valuable insight into Australian culture. However, I didn’t include WWOOF in my itinerary in case there aren’t farms available.
Then, I will fly to Auckland, New Zealand. My reasons for wanting to travel to New Zealand are that it’s a vibrant backpacking hub and it’s where Lord of the Rings was filmed. Whenever my mom was away, my sister and I would secretly watch Lord of the Rings with our dad. While our activities don’t seem scandalous in retrospect, at the time we felt like rebels, and watching Lord of the Rings made me fall in love with New Zealand.
In New Zealand, I’ll fling myself into kiwi culture. On my first day, I will rise with the sun and take a long bus ride to Tongariro Crossing where I’ll spend eight hours hiking the 19.4 kilometer trail. The next day I’ll explore New Zealand’s volcanoes on a coast walk. Then, I’ll explore Waitomo Caves because I love spelunking and the magical appeal of a glow worm cave. I also will satiate my desire to learn about Maori culture by visiting Te Hana Te Ao Marama, which provides village tours and cultural performances. After that, I’ll let my muscles heal while traversing Auckland, enjoying the Art Gallery, and sampling tea on Queen Street. Finally,
