Social and cultural tensions between movies and the American people have a very complicated dynamic. Movies are very influential to the masses but also the reason for many controversial views and discussion. Yet making Blockbuster and Indie movies that challenge popular cultural and social views are cohesive to American culture. The partnership between films and the American people is almost toxic in nature because of how diverse our population is and the reactions that can occur. Another way that you can view this that these films can be considered protests by telling a story over a certain topic that is widely unpopular. During the time period this movie took place, the Vietnam War was a very unpopular topic to most young American and would actively speak out against the war.

The hilarious romantic comedy featuring Eddie Murphy and Arsenal Hall called Coming to America. This film mowed over a topic of immigration to America and cultural views of most Americans about people from other countries. The American dream persuades many immigrants to move to America but our movies shows us what life would be like in the 1980’s for someone new to the US. The rundown building and dreary ice covered roads of Queens, New York showing us that the grass is not always greener in the other side.

Ranked number one by entertainment weekly for best high school movie was The Breakfast Cub. This films told us a story about five teenagers at very different parts of their live coming together and overcoming social high school stereotypes. Till this day most high school students have to deal with some sort of stereotype whether it be jock, basket case, nerd, or trouble maker but over 90% feel in some way that they have been miss labeled. The controversial film helped break typical high school barriers by teaching kids to move past what they think they know about classmate and encourage them to get to know one
