Kurt Vonnegut has built a universe for Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse-Five where Billy’s cruel, unforgiving reality is contrasted by a philosophical utopia where he has learned to operate without the pains of being human. Within this self-described ‘telegraphic’ and ‘schizophrenic’ novel, Vonnegut manages to swing the reader halfway across the galaxy to a planet inhabited by a plunger-like race called the Tralfamadorians, take them into the harrowing depths of a POW camp, and show you a man who is increasingly coming undone at the seams after having lived with the psychological terrors of the Dresden bombing. They explain it to him as simply as they possibly can, “All time is all time. It does not change. It does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. It simply is. Take it moment by moment, and you will find that we are all, as I 've said before, bugs in amber” (108). Their outlook on time does not lend itself to free will, just as any earthly deterministic institution. Tralfamadorianism is directly related to and used to critique Christianity in Slaughterhouse-Five. In Vonnegut’s Dresden Novel: Slaughterhouse-Five Stanley Schatt reaffirms this idea of free will v.s. determinism, “Since Vonnegut’s novels are usually constructed around two diametrically opposed points of view, it is not surprising that Slaughterhouse-Five is built around the irreconcilable conflict between free will and determinism” (Schatt). Billy benefits greatly from this new cosmic outlook. He believes so much in the teachings of Tralfamadore that he even becomes a Jesus-like figure later in his life, eventually being publicly executed much like his Christian doppleganger. The fractured structure of the novel allows Vonnegut to contrast different concepts and imagery, often times tying them together with symbolism or motifs. Such as, when Billy is thrown into the bush after being captured by Germans, he travels to 1967 to his car on his way to a Lions Club meeting. Billy notices that the burnt ghetto of Illium resemble the aftermath of Dresden. At the Lions Club is a speaker who was in favor of, “...bombing North Vietnam back to the Stone Ages” (76). These two instances in Billy’s swing through time are tied together by the theme of war. Vonnegut is using the peculiar structure of his novel to take many seemingly unassociated events such as these and draw meaning out of them. In Slaughterhouse-Five:Time Out of Joint a similar connection is drawn,
“The scalding water of the delousing station brings on a flashback of Billy being bathed by his mother, but his gurgling and cooing is then interrupted by a flash-forward of Billy playing golf and Billy being told that he is ‘trapped in another blob of amber’ and has no free will.
