Moral Relativism In Diane Wakoski's Sula

The idea or concept of breaking societal norms, departing from the modern and creating a new concept that has never been seen before, and often seen as art. Diane Wakoski explains that postmodern art is created when “High and low culture come together in all postmodern art”. The artifact consists of traditional block tower crumbling as a new modern block replaces one of the old, thus incorporating the new and old cultures and philosophies combined in one piece of art. The artifact that I created relates to the topic of moral relativism, the concept that suggests that beliefs and hopes are decided based on an agreed doctrine versus a set doctrine for all. “Marriage, apparently, had changed all that, but having had no intimate knowledge of marriage [...] she was ill prepared for the possessiveness of the one person she felt close to” (119). Sula’s lack of presence in the society shapes her differently, in a more post modernistic way based on the experiences she encounters during her absence. When she returns to The Bottom, she becomes the gossip of the town, and causes the society to crumble as her individuality influences others and their actions. The concept of marriage and family did not exist in Sula’s mind, whereas Nel follows the philosophy of society. In this time period, the idea of families living separate and individual lives did not exist. Sula explains that “Eva’s real sick. I had to put her where she could be watched and taken care of” (100). This post modernistic concept of letting others do your work appears throughout many of Sula’s actions. She places her grandmother, a women that everyone looks up to, in an old folk’s home, and removes her from society. Sula’s postmodern ideas and concepts baffles many, especially Nel who follows the society’s philosophies religiously.
