Moral Issues in film Dead Man Walking The film, which I am analysing, is 'Dead man walking' the moral issue, which is being dealt with, is capital punishment. The film was based on a true story, therefore we get a true view of capital punishment. The names used in the film are the real names of the people it was based on. The film is about a man who was involved in the killing of two innocent people and was in prison for six years before the prison decided to let capital punishment take place. Capital punishment is a punishment which takes away the life of a criminal who has done wrong and cannot be forgiven because they have committed a serious crime. Another name given to capital punishment is execution or the death penalty. The death penalty is the harshest form of punishment enforced in the United Sates today. Once a jury has convicted a criminal offence they go to the second part of the trial, the punishment phase. If the jury recommends the death penalty and the judge agrees then the criminal will face some form of execution, lethal injection is the most common form used today. There was a period from 1972 to 1976 that capital punishment was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Their reason for this decision was that the death penalty was cruel and unusual punishment under the eighth amendment. The decision was reversed when new methods of execution were introduced. There are many different methods used here are some examples; Electric Chair which is when a person is strapped down to a chair and when an electrode is applied to the scalp and another one to the calf of one leg. The electrodes are moistened with a... ... middle of paper ... ...uld be the only one to take it away from us. The murderer should be sentenced for life and be made to feel the guilt for what they have done through their whole life. Overall the film was very effective in making capital punishment appeal both acceptable and unacceptable. The film has shown capital punishment to be acceptable by showing flashbacks of the murder and the emotional parents. The way in which capital punishment has been shown to be unacceptable is by showing Mathews mother getting really emotional when talking about the execution. So overall both families have been left with strong emotions. This film would influence people's attitude because strong views are shown for both for and against capital punishment. Overall I think the film handled the subject well because it has exposed the issue well balanced.
