Morality is our Humanity The struggle of “good versus evil” is nothing new to the members of the human race, but more often than not many people forget this concept is one of the main components of morality, a guiding compass that exists within every person. Every person has morals but several individuals do not know what to make of morality or do not realize just how important it is for our society to study this ancient ideal. To understand morality and its effect on the world we must first understand what morality is and how it applies to the world in general and in an occupational sense, how morality is influenced by media sources like television and film, and how morality is influenced by the literary world. In the article “Contrasting Role Morality and Professional Morality: Implications for Practice” by Kevin Gibson a truth about professional morality is revealed when this is stated, “professional morality involves more than following a code” (Gibson 23). Some may say morality has nothing to do with the world we work in, but working is more than showing up and doing a job; it involves social interaction, respect between managers and employees in lower positions and every manager or employee will have to make decisions in their occupation, for example a manager might fire an employee, this could be morally questionable practice, or an employee is always on time for their shifts, this could be considered a good moral choice. Professional morality consists of many components because what we do at work has many outcomes that often effect more than ourselves, rather than with regular morality that tends to guide the individual and often only hurts the individual. Professional morality exists within every profession whether the medical, education, or scientific field, and when it comes to professional morality questioning neither employee nor practice is completely safe. When concerning morality and the literary landscape it is said in David Halpin’s article, “Why a Romantic Conception of Education Matters” that, “It is not that Coleridge, and his fellow Romantics, believed that ‘feeling is all’, but rather that feeling for them is primary-in morals, in the acquisition of knowledge about the world, and in the proper pursuit of love” (Halpin 332). Morality is not the only theme or concept that is found in the pages of a novel or in the corners of a poetry anthology, however, it encompasses every theme that involves humanity, motivation, social interaction, and emotions thus it is of much importance to study, and like how “Frakenstein’s” monster wanted to study what it was to be human, novels remind us of the same thing. Words have the power to affect our psyches and a crass comment can lead to ourselves justifying the action of slapping another, or a compliment could allow us to smile and fire a compliment right back at the person who complimented the other, these actions all have moral connotations to them in some regard.
