The Great Gatsby: The Destruction of Morals In The Great Gatsby, the author F. Scott Fitzgerald shows the destruction of morals in society. The characters in this novel, all lose their morals in attempt to find their desired place in the social world. They trade their beliefs for the hope of being acceptance. Myrtle believes she can scorn her true social class in an attempt to be accepted into Ton's, Jay Gatsby who bases his whole life on buying love with wealth, and Daisy, who instead of marrying the man she truly loves, marries someone with wealth. The romance of money lures the characters in The Great Gatsby into surrendering their values, but in the end, "the streets paved with gold led to a dead end" (Vogue, December 1999). The first example of a character whose morals are destroyed is Myrtle. Myrtle's attempt to enter into the group to which the Buchanans belong is doomed to fail. She enters the affair with Tom, hoping to adopt his way of life and be accepted into his class to escape from her own. Her class is that of the middle class. Her husband, Wilson, owns a gas station, making an honest living and trying his best to succeed in a world where everything revolves around material possessions. With her involvement in Tom's class, she only becomes vulgar and corrupt like the rich. She loses all sense of morality by hurting others in her futile attempt to join the ranks of Tom's social class. In doin...
Across the state of New York, thirty-eight hundred inmates are being held against their will in an eighty square-foot cell for twenty-three hours a day as a form of rehabilitation. The purpose of solitary confinement is meant to give individuals time to dwell on their actions, and how they can better themselves moving forward; even if it breaks their morale in the process. The New York Times conveys this through a 2014 article, “New York Rethinks Solitary Confinement,” “Inmates placed in solitary confinement were nearly seven times as likely to harm themselves as those in the general jail population.” By stating this, the editorial board expresses that the isolation unit is doing more harm than good. Solitary confinement displays that the damage is not only being inflicted mentally, but physically as well. During the
Although legalizing concealed handguns create an easy access to firearms by criminals and emotionally disturbed people, it is less likely that these individuals will use their weapons if they feel their target is armed as well. Allowing citizens to carry would always cause the question of ‘who is carrying?’ to arise in the criminals’ minds. According to economist and political commentator John Lott, had the states that did not have concealed handgun laws in 1992 actually allowed concealed carry, the murders would be reduced by “1,839; rapes by 3,727; aggravated assaults by 10,990; robberies by 61,064; burglaries by 112,665; larcenies by 93,274; and auto thefts by 41,512,” (Lott 58). Simply by allowing individuals the right to carry concealed weapons cuts major crime rates dramatically. When criminals are aware that their potential victims could also be armed, they are less likely to act on their violence for fear of the assault turning against them. Whereas, if concealed carry was illegal, criminals would know that their target would most likely not be carrying, thus making these individuals more likely to act on violent
Myrtle is married to a mechanic, but is sleeping with Tom. Fitzgerald's novel seems to affirm the Biblical adage that the love of money is the root of all evil, for his characters value money inordinately. And this attitude is a central moral concern in the novel. Fitzgerald's characters erroneously believe money can buy them love, friends, and happiness. Gatsby tries to buy Daisy's love throughout the book.
“Corruption is like a ball of snow, once it's set a rolling it must increase.” (Charles Colton) Sadly when many begin to go down the nefarious path of corruption they can’t stop themselves. This is due to the human qualities of greed and materialism. In the rhetorical piece “The Great Gatsby”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby began his corrupt career in bootlegging and never stopped. He became money hungry and only accumulated more dirty money throughout the years. However, Gatsby was able to turn his life around and he built something of himself from nothing, but unfortunately he had to do so illegally. Therefore I believe that to a small extent Gatsby was a commendable man for he was able to make something of himself, but Gatsby chose an immoral and corrupt path to get there, making him a character deserving a small degree of admiration.
The first character who represents the shallowness of the wealthy is Myrtle Wilson, even though she is not wealthy at all. She seeks to escape her own class and stoops to the low point of betraying her trusting husband who loves her more than anything. Her attempt to break into the higher class that Tom belongs to is doomed to fail. Even though she does take on Tom's way of living during their affair, she only becomes more vulgar and corrupt like the rich. She scorns people from her own class and loses all sense of morality. Myrtle never finds a place in Tom's higher social division, and what reveals her impertinence most is that she thought she would succeed in the first place, giving up all her morals for the wealthy.
In conclusion, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald shows examples of characters that experience the corruption of morality and humanity, by emphasizing the way main characters such as Gatsby, Daisy, and/or, Nick, feel after interacting with other characters and also how they treat
The 31 states that have “shall issue” laws allowing private citizens to carry concealed weapons have, on average, a 24 percent lower violent crime rate, a 19 percent lower murder rate and a 39 percent lower robbery rate than states that forbid concealed weapons.(David Lampo)In fact, the nine states with the lowest violent crime rates are all right-to-carry states.(David lampo)Concealed handguns set up rules of self authority throughout the state that are in.basically it an you want to shoot me i'll ...
Decisions that people today might be able to relate to. Poor decisions often times lead to people being arrested, injured, or even sometimes killed. There were obvious poor decisions made in The Great Gatsby, some of which made by Myrtle because of her being caught up in her “love” for Tom. There were abounding factors of her loving Tom. She obviously didn’t like her husband because, “ [She] thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit to lick [her] shoe” (Fitzgerald 34). Myrtle doesn't care much, if at all, about her husband. Her obsession with Tom makes her unreasonable. This is one of the reasons that she treats her husband poorly and doesn’t care about it. At their party Myrtle aggravated Tom by shouting, “Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” (Fitzgerald 37). Myrtle ignores the consequences of aggravating Tom at their party. Not only does she not listen to his pleas to get her to stop talking about Daisy she ignores the fact that he is drunk. Through Myrtle’s obsession with Tom, “she ran out in a road. Son-of-a-bitch didn’t ever stop the car” (Fitzgerald 149). Myrtle was so obsessed with Tom , and his money, that she ran into the road risking her life to be with him. Her desire for his money caused her to act and think irrationally. Even if Tom was in the car and stopped would he introduce her to his wife and they all go home together? In conclusion do not let desires make the decisions of life, because
The benefit of having a concealed weapons permit in the United States of America is that fact that you know you are always safe not having to depend on others, but having the ability to protect yourself. “In June 2008, the court ruled the law that strictly limited the possession of handguns in the Washington, D.C. area as unconstitutional (Levinson).” In our nation’s capital this happened, because if individuals were not given the right of a concealed weapon or any kind of gun that is not going along with the Constitution of the United States. Which States “"A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. (The Bill of Rights)" “The court ruled that
In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald shows that a materialistic mindset will corrupt the chance at true love. Gatsby tried to get Daisy to love him again by showing off his money and failed because he didn’t put his heart and self into their relationship. Myrtle mistakenly married a man whom she thought was wealthy and turned out he was poor. She quickly attempted to evade their marriage, but then had an affair with Tom Buchanan, a well known rich man. Fitzgerald demonstrates how none of these relationships worked out because of the materialistic ways of these characters. Finally, this theme is explored because it proves how true love isn’t real with fake values. True love should be two people who love each other unconditionally and is not based on money-oriented things.
people to forget their wretchedness and have fun. This created a society obsessed with materialism and prodigality which eliminated moral values and traditional beliefs, and become engaged in a life of pointless extravagance and indulgence. The ‘Great Gatsby’ can be. regarded as a social satire and remarks on the downfall of moral values and excessive indulgence in society. When different characters in the novel are viewed, it is obvious that not all have the same social standings in society.
In conclusion, The Great Gatsby reveals the carelessness and shallowness of the characters in the upper class. Society is totally corrupted and the character’s lives revolve around the money and extravagant lifestyles. All of the characters are surrounded with expensive and unnecessary itms, which in turn, dulls their dream of actual success. Scott F. Fitzgerald provides a powerful and everlasting message of a corrupt, materialistic society and the effects that it has on the idea of the American dream.
The moral decay of society during the 1920’s was represented through the characters in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. People became selfish as their wealth increased, and they didn’t care at all what they did to other people, as long as they ended up okay in the end. Dishonesty became accepted, and that led to a downfall of society. Because of the character’s lack of morals and responsibility, Gatsby, an innocent man, died.
At first glance, The Great Gatsby is merely a classic American tragedy, portraying the story of a man's obsession with a fantasy, and his resulting downfall. However, Fitzgerald seems to weave much more than that into the intricate web of emotional interactions he creates for the reader. One interesting element is the concepts of greatness each has. For Daisy, it lies in material wealth, and in the comfort and security associated with it. Daisy seems to be easily impressed by material success, as when she is touring Gatsby's mansion and seems deeply moved by his collection of fine, tailored shirts. It would seem that Tom's relative wealth, also, had at one time impressed her enough to win her in marriage. In contrast to that, Gatsby seems to not care a bit about money itself, but rather only about the possibility that it can win over Daisy. In fact, Gatsby's extreme generosity gives the reader the impression that Gatsby would otherwise have never even worked at attaining wealth had it not been for Daisy. For Gatsby, the only thing of real importance was his pursuit of Daisy. It would seem that these elements are combined, too in the character Myrtle.
People may say concealed carry is not an effective form of self- defense but a study by Gary Kreck, published in the journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, found when someone pulls a gun out in self-defense the criminal retreats 55.5 % of the time (Concealed Gun). Others against concealed carry might have negative thoughts about the “Shall- issue”, which means states require a license or permit to carry a concealed hand gun, and applicants must meet well defined criteria. People say the “Shall-issue” increases rape, robbery, and violent crime. A study by John Lott shows the “Shall-issue” reduced homicide by 8.5%, aggravated assault by 7...
