In the Mood for Love according to me in a classic romantic movie which captures the emotion of love very beautifully. The story is about the doomed romance between two neighbors Mr.Chow and Mrs.Chan , whose spouses are having an illicit affair. While their spouses are away "on business"/"taking care of a sick mother" the neighbors go out for dinners and hang out together on lonely nights. While trying to not be like their spouces they end up falling in love with each eather although resisting the temptation of going too far. With the story revolving around this plot the time period of the 1960s has been created very meticulously with a lot of detail given to set ups, costumes, and even the music. The love and the tension between the two characters is very nicely potrayed. The romance is not only shown with the two characters in the film but is seen in every single of the sumptous well crafted frames in the film. May it be the lamp at the end of the street where boodles are sold, or the couple staring at each other while coming up or down the stairs, or the dingy small corridor where they keep meting or the sight of rain through the light of a lamp create an atmosphere of romance with a sense of longing that exists between the couple. From cigarette smoke to droplets of rain, from noodle steam to the grill of a small metal fan every scene is just so picturisque. This movie for me was a play of pure emotion. Even the scene where Chan is rehearsing a scene of how she would react to finding that her husband was cheating on her and slaps Chow is exquisite. Also the part where she walks through the narrow red passage and goes to meet sick Chow , when she secretly goes to singapore to Chow’s house after he shifts there shows the immense love between the two.
