Vengeance with a Smile
Having revenge is an intuitive human characteristic. “An eye for an eye would make the whole world blind” (Mahatma Gandhi). In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montresor’s revenge is emotional and desirable that demands justice. The plans of a man whose been pushed to the edge of no returning back. Montresor 's murder of Fortunato was premeditated, from the planning of the day, baiting him, and to making sure that his body was never found.
To begin with, Montresor carefully plans his murder wisely. “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe 1118). He waited to make sure that he made the best revenge scenario possible, not allowing his emotions to overtake his judgments, and to commit the murder …show more content…

“He had a weak point—this Fortunato—although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine” (1118). Knowing that Fortunato loved wine, he offered him a wine that would have peaked his interest, so he tempts him with a story of buying a genuineness cask of Amontillado. Concocting his story that he had a friend, Luchesi, who will be available to sample the Amontillado if Fortunato decline, but he knew that Fortunato wouldn’t be able to let the opportunity pass him by. Doing so it piqued his interest so they headed to Montresor house to the catacomb. Leading Fortunato underground into the crypt, laying on the ground were bones, bottles and casks of wines while he continuously encourages Fortunato to drink as they walk through the dark passageway in the catacombs. In addition, he carefully gains his trust pretending to care about his health/ well-being and being friendly to him referring him as “my friend,” “my good friend,” and “my poor friend” repeatedly. While agreeing he ignores Montresor 's many warnings about the dampness of the catacombs and the threat it poses to his health. Another thought is that he chose a safe place which is his family catacombs completing the crime and to dispose of the body. Quickly shackling Fortunato to the wall he then builds a brick wall insuring that no one will find or even if he screamed for help, no one would be able to hear him. Making it extremely unlikely that anyone would ever go down there anyway. “My heart grew sick—on account of the dampness of the catacombs. I hastened to make an end of my labor. I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up” (1122). He had a little bit of remorse and had a brief moment of regret but then returns to the task in the final brick. The final sounds were shaking of the bells on Fortunato’s hat and Montresor leaves. Fifty years later, Montresor tells that Fortunato’s bones were never disturbed and he committed the perfect crime.
In conclusion, “An eye for an eye would make the whole world blind” (Mahatma Gandhi) meaning whatever you do to your neighbor will be done to you. The whole entire incident occurred fifty years back but nobody knows anything about the cold blooded murder or at least for half of a century. “For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. In pace requiescat” (1122). Good or bad an individual depending on one’s actions, one will reap one of those actions. It may be sour or sweet, but it depends on the nature of the person actions performed. So, Montresor did achieve the vengeance that
