Although they were good friends, an insult made the friendship vanish. Montresor makes their friendship a weapon to kill Fortunato. For example, Montressor said, “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met,” even though he hated fortunato. Montresor decided to be friendly with Fortunato, so he can win the trust of the other one.
