In the “Monkey’s Paw”, “The Land Lady”, and “The Gift of the Magi” contain a type of irony. Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. There are three types of irony. The first type of irony is verbal irony Is when the authors or speakers say something but means the opposite. The second type of irony is dramatic irony, and it is when the audience knows something the character doesn't which typically occurs in movies. the finally type of irony is situational irony and that is when something occurs and the reverse of that happens.

The major speaks a magical talisman which would grant you three wishes. the good luck charm was a mummified monkeys paw, Mr.White is so intrigued by the paw that he begged the Major for it. the major told Mr. white all the great pain it has caused him and then Mr. Morris throws into the fire. Quickly Mr. White retrieves it from fire and believes the major was crazy for throwing it away like that. The major tell him he should have just left it where it was in the fire and he should have just let it burn. Major warns The family of the consequences of the paw then leaves. Ms . White says “How could two hundred pounds hurt you father.”The quote is ironic because later on in the story Herbert their son, dies and in compensation for his death they get the two hundred pounds they wished for and in the end Herbert was hurt. So Mr White wishes for two hundred pounds and nothing happens.The families goes off to bed in doubt of the paws powers. The family wakes up and the air feels calm and quiet, they send their son off to school then sit down and have breakfast together. Henry is about a young named Della who wants to get and gift for her husband Jim for christmas. She doesn't have enough money to get a gift even after she resorted to begging. “There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it” It is an overstatement actually because there was need to get upset over not getting a gift for someone. The writer uses a sense of sarcasm when he wrote that because there was no need to be upset like that. Della gets home and outside her shabby apartment window she sees a shop that buys hair. She goes to the shop and sells all of her hair which was long and beautiful. Della gets twenty dollars and buys jim a watch chain for his prized possession his watch. Della goes back home and waits for the arrival of her husband. Jim is shocked to find Della’s haircut to such shortness. Della gives Jim his gift, but Jim doesn't have his watch any more.Jim says“Let's put our Christmas presents away and keep 'em a while. They're too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.’’ Jim sold his watch to buy Della beautiful combs that she has been wanting for her hair.they both gave up their most prized possessions to get each other gift for their possessions. Irony is the contrast between expectation and reality. There are three different types; verbal, situational, and dramatic. Verbal irony is when one person says something, but means the opposite. Situational irony is when an event happens that is the opposite of what was expected to happen. Dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that one or more characters do not.
For example, in the beginning of the story, the narrator starts by talking about Mrs. Freeman. “Besides the neutral expressions that she wore when she was alone, Mrs. Freeman had two others, forward and reverse, that she used for all her human dealings” (433). The irony in this first line is that she is a “Freeman,” yet only has three different expressions. Another example of an irony that is easily noticeable is when Mrs. Hopewell considered Manley Pointer as “good country people.” “He was just good country people, you know” (441). The irony in this line is that in the end, Manley Pointer, whom is supposedly is “good country people,” ends up being a thief who steals Hulga’s prosthetic leg and runs and not only steals, but admits that he is not a Christian, making the line, “good country people,” a dramatic irony. However, one of the most ironic characters in the story is Hulga herself as she understands little of herself, regardless of the high education she holds in philosophy. For example, Hulga imagines that Pointer is easily seduced. “During the night she had imagined that she seduced him” (442). Yet, when they kissed, she was the one who was seduced and having the “extra surge of adrenaline… that enables one to carry a packed trunk out of a burning house…”

The imagery of the mountains and forest that Saki describes also adds to the irony, as their friendship is different from the harsh environment. The second example of irony is when wolves show up instead of what they thought were humans. The symbolism of their shouts and the tree trunk show how their friendship was actually meaningless, as their chances of surviving the encounter with the wolves is slim. There is situational irony, which is when the situation turns out differently than expected. Also, dramatic irony is present, which is when you as a reader knows more than the character. The authors seem to base their whole story around irony to surprise their readers.
