Unfortunately many factors can lead to the bad card where in both the game and life, people are trying to prevent us from achieving the goal. There are two choices to change the outcome however, we may either give up (fold) or we may take a chance (call). The beauty of taking the risk is that if lucky, life gives you that much-needed card. When dealt that winning card, a person is immediately uplifted. That one good hand drives a person to outweigh the pros from the cons and continue to strive for the winning pot or in this case, the goal in life. Enrique in Sonia Nazario’s “Enrique’s Journey,” is dealt both the good and bad cards in life, as he undergoes a battle of being pushed internally to continue while also being pulled externally to quit, thus leading him to unearth himself as a worthy human being while on the journey to the U.S; sadly however, his arrival in the U.S refutes what he clearly envisioned for himself.

What happened to Oscar related closely to what happened to Belicia in the past, from getting into unhealthy relationships to getting beat in cane fields due to those relationships. The role of history tends to act as a vehicle to foreshadow the events in Oscar’s life in the future. If history had not happened the way it did, with Trujillo’s spread of terror, Oscar and Lola would not have had a life in New Jersey to escape the evil. If Oscar never left the Dominican Republic, his fragile self-esteem would have been in a worse situation than how it was now. Although his family had a chance to escape to New Jersey, Oscar’s attempt to escape was not successful because his life ended right back where it started.
Who is stronger? The East or the West? Do the Oriental people truly succumb to the threats of the western white man? Based on the views of the non-oriental people, the Oriental people secretly want to get dominated by a stronger force, comparing them to a woman, or just simply calling their race feminine. The show M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang is able to express different issues regarding the theory of Orientalism by hiding it amongst several conversations between characters. The play can be seen as highly political because of topics it chooses to discuss despite the fact that the lead character is a diplomat. Though somewhat unrelated; M. Butterfly can even have a certain Brecht-esque quality to it. Because it contains several moments that can make the audience member question what is going on and the story itself, Brecht would be happy. The show can confuse the audience and make them think. Gallimard and Song also talk to the audience directly at certain points which in a way can distance them from the story because it can make it known that they are, indeed watching a play. M. Butterfly holds many political and Brechtian qualities that prove many issues that go on today. Seeing these representations of foreign races views on one another can hopefully help to get the countries to realize their harsh judgments.
In Julia Alvarez’s novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, the story is set mostly in the time period of the Trujillo dictatorship. This period from the 1930’s-60’s was a brutal regime led by Rafael Trujillo, who was known for ruling by fear. Those who were to oppose his rule would often end up missing, due to them being ordered to be killed. During this novel, the Mirabal sisters bravely stood up to Trujillo and joined the resistance, with their goal being to take him out of power, and to liberate the Dominican Republic. While reading M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang, there were some interesting questions that arose from the story. What if there is a deeper meaning than we are seeing? Some specific points that are going to be dug deeper into are how Gallimard shows his masculinity and why he feels suicide is a better choice rather than admitting that he fell in love with a man. The play is about a man from the civil service in China who falls in love with an oriental actress. They have an affair and his wife leaves him.
Hwang effectively uses the opera Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini as a framework to mold the main character, Rene Gallimard. Gallimard longs to be like the hero in Madame Butterfly, Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, who dominates and possesses a beautiful Asian woman. Within the drama Gallimard concedes that he is not very attractive and that he hasn't always been popular amongst the ladies. Gallimard states "We, who are not handsome, nor brave, nor powerful, yet somehow believe like Pinkerton, that we deserve a Butterfly"(747). Obviously Gallimard is not happy with himself or his life so he goes in search for his Butterfly or more importantly a new identity.
