For this media reflection I choose to tread the article about the mommy wars. This article focused mainly on the war in society that with either being stay at home mom, or a “supermom”. A stay at home mom is self-explanatory, they are mothers that do not have jobs and they stay at home with the kids and takes care of the house buy cooking, cleaning, and shopping. A “Supermom” is described as a mom that juggles the requirements of a stay at home mom and has a job on top of that. A supermom in society is supposed to have perfectly mastered how to juggle these two large tasks. Most of this article focuses on how the stay at home moms are criticized as being lazy and not wanting to work and just depends on the husbands to provide for everything. Also, how the supermoms are criticized about having jobs and that when they are at work they are “neglecting” their children and are bad moms and are selfish.

There was an article entitled why woman can’t have it all, and our readings that stated women struggle to both work and be a great mom. Kim is fortunate, being able to continue her job while working from home, so she is there to experience being a full time mom, but Kim also gets to work and make her own money as well. Kim’s family is a traditional family in a sense, with Aden’s father going to work daily away from the house, and his mom being home with him, but my aunt is working from home as well. Kim will be the first to tell you it is not easy being a great wife, mom, employee and keeping up the house chores, but she will also be the first to tell you how rewarding it is for her to balance all her hats. Comparing Kim to what we learned in class, she has many similarities and differences to our lectures. One example is how she spends more time on housework than her significant other, and also works which does not appear to affect her marital relationship or her child. Sometimes I can see role strain with her, especially when she gets busy at the end of the month, but she is great at balancing everything and doing what is important first, realizing her most important roles are mommy, wife, employee, and then homemaker. The core of “Mommy Wars” is about mothers should wave rights of studying and working to take care of children at home and be a housewife. One of these stories titled “The Ordinary Devoted Mother”, Bechdel tells the story of her trying to write a memoir about her mom. One of the major themes in this story is reading, and writing. Bechdel explores what writing is, how it is important, and how she perceives writing herself.

Women have persistently been challenged with issues regarding what it means to be a ‘good mother’. Although times continue to change, issues confronting 21st century mothers, remain similar to the ones addressed in past generations. An abundance of mothers in the 21st century are still faced with the complex issue regarding the ‘stay-at-home mom’ stereotype, in spite of the fact that the feminist movement has provided women with more rights in the present-day, then ever before. However, while strides have been made, these changes have had an affect on society’s notion of motherhood. The portrayal of motherhood is determined by countless expectations in which society has established. Such expectancies have expanded, which now effect how motherhood is depicted in different cultures. As a whole the feminist movement has strongly influenced Western Society, which has resulted in women’s suffrage, the right to make individual decisions, and has also led to wide-ranging employment for women at more equivalent wages. However, the emergence of female employment has created a war between ‘stay-at-home’ and ‘working’ mothers, which is often referred to as ‘Mommy Wars’. In addition, female employment provides men with the opportunity to stay at home and become the primary caregiver, which has ultimately had a large impact on societies notion of motherhood, treating them differently than primary caregivers of the opposite gender. This paper will examine how the feminist movement has altered societies notion of motherhood in the 21st century in comparison to past generations as a result of working mothers and stay at home fathers.
Motherhood is a term used and displayed in everyday life. It has several aspects that require many talents and hard work. However, sometimes motherhood needs little to no talent or dedication, as well. Motherhood is an opportunity to serve others and have a big impact on other’s life.
Throughout history, the roles of men and women in the home suggested that the husband would provide for his family, usually in a professional field, and be the head of his household, while the submissive wife remained at home. This wife’s only jobs included childcare, housekeeping, and placing dinner on the table in front of her family. The roles women and men played in earlier generations exemplify the way society limited men and women by placing them into gender specific molds; biology has never claimed that men were the sole survivors of American families, and that women were the only ones capable of making a pot roast. This depiction of the typical family has evolved. For example, in her observation of American families, author Judy Root Aulette noted that more families practice Egalitarian ideologies and are in favor of gender equality. “Women are more likely to participate in the workforce, while men are more likely to share in housework and childcare (apa…).” Today’s American families have broken the Ward and June Cleaver mold, and continue to become stronger and more sufficient. Single parent families currently become increasingly popular in America, with single men and women taking on the roles of both mother and father. This bend in the gender rules would have, previously, been unheard of, but in the evolution of gender in the family, it’s now socially acceptable, and very common.

Men and women are working harder than ever to survive in today's tough economy. It's a big challenge for low and middle class families to survive. To meet growing demands, it's getting difficult for families to depend on one income. To contribute to family income, mothers are coming forward and joining the workforce. Working mothers are the one who takes care of the family and work outside the home. They may be a single mothers or married mothers. Working mothers usually work to support their family financially. Some of the mothers work, just because they are more career-oriented. Working mothers may work part time or full time. Women are now the primary or only income source for 40% of US households with kids, according to a new Pew survey (Wang, Parker and Taylor, ch. 1). They play a major role in raising their family and doing household chores. There are many reasons that why mothers should work.
