The First Modern Olympic Games(1896 Athens Olympics) During the 19th century Europe, small scaled athletic events were held throughout the whole region. After the 1896 Olympic Games, which was held in Athens, Greece, famously named sport events were made. Geographically, Greece is located at the south end of the Balkan Peninsula in Southern Europe. As a brief history of Greece during the 19th century, Thessaly was transferred from the Ottoman Empire into the kingdom of Greece, because of the aftermath of Turkey's defeat by Russia in 1878. His name is Pierre de Coubertin, also known as the Father of the Olympics. Coubertin is a French Baron who got inspired by the ancient Olympic Games and made the Modern Olympic Games actually happen in real life. He was interested in education throughout his life and he had a faith believing in that developing minds and bodies both, were the best way of developing young people. Coubertin visited the ruins of ancient Olympia, the place where the ancient Olympic Games took place. Coubertin's vision for the Olympic Games may be summarized as "To ennoble and strengthen sports, to ensure their independence and duration, and thus to enable them better to fulfill the educational role incumbent upon them in the modern world." (Factsheet the Olympic Movement). Coubertin believed that the best and only way to generate widespread acceptance of his theory was through the revival of the Olympic Games. Coubertin's goals were to build courage, endurance, and learn fair plays for the young people and hoped the games would bring back the ideals of physical, mental, and spiritual excellence displayed in the ancient games. Plus, he believed that world peace could be furthered through sports and competitions. But fundamentally, Coubertin's ultimate goal was that he wanted the games to become an advertisement of sports spreading his theory around the entire world.
