In my opinion, MLK's purpose of giving the "I have a dream" speech was to inform the public that even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed to free African Americans, and give them hope for a better life, they still were not free. During MLK's speech, he elaborates on this by saying that "One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination." This quote shows that after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, the African American people still don't feel entirely equal to whites. Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered as motivation to fight for their rights and help paint the picture of what America could look like in the future.
