While registering classes for this semester, I was very skeptical about enrolling in any English courses. As this is my first semester in college, I was not very keen to see myself slacking by taking something that I always prefer to avoid. But when my advisor told me it is required, I had no choice but to welcome it. English, especially writing, has never been my strong forte. The apparent reason for my skepticism towards writing is my knowledge and credibility as a writer. I have always struggled at it. I have always worried about what I would do if I was put in a class with the smart kids, who has known English right from their birth, unlike me. But to my disbelief, this semester has been quite different as well as surprising. The four big essays and the many small writing that I did for this class implanted some confidence in me. It has comforted me in dropping some level of anxiety and procrastination. In this class I have learned about how to keep consistent focus for a writing, how to use correct grammars, how to draft and revise essays and many others. To begin with, the area that I often had to strife while writing an essay was keeping the consistent focus throughout the essay. Even after developing a thesis statement, I sometime fail to relate my following paragraphs to the topic. I have even observed myself that, every time I write an essay, it takes me a while to really take-off and keep it steady. This has been noticed by the teacher also. One the rough draft for the first essay that I wrote about the trip to Bhutan with my dad, contrary to my thesis, the second paragraph, almost a page long, mostly talked about the history of Bhutan and how my family lived there before fleeing to Nepal. More than 75% of what ... ... middle of paper ... ... open. This is something that I have always done to avoid using the same word repeatedly. For example, on the research paper about the Red Cross, I had to use the word ‘help’ for more than fifteen times. One the first draft I wrote on the paper, the only word I saw was the word ‘help’ everywhere. Thesaurus.com came in handy, and I changed all the ‘help’ words to it synonyms. Not only did it increase my vocabulary knowledge, it also resisted the reader from being bored. This self-made technique has benefited me to some extent. This class, English Composition I, has been an exceptional learning experience. The things that I learned and the little things that I have known before has bolstered in improving my writing skills. As I said earlier, writing has never been my strength, but now that I know few things, I can do a fair justice to the topic I am writing about.
