Is it really about every woman?
In this article, we are presented to the roots of rap music and how misogyny is deeply rooted in the rap industry. We also see the way misogyny is linked to capitalist patriarchal system. The misogyny which is presented to the audience not only attacks women, but more specifically, it attacks women of African American origin. Several factors encourage artists to to use misogynistic imagery in their music, namely the dominant culture to which they have been exposed, the male ego and finally, for financial reasons. Moreover, we will explore the effects of the way women are portrayed in rap music, and how it affects many aspects of individuals and the society.

To the youth of the new generation, music plays a significant role, whereby it conveys messages and feelings. Those who feel left out in terms of their race, their class, or their gender identity find an escape. But what happens when that escape portrays a wrong image of themselves? Whether they are males or females, the young generation is easily influenced by what they see and learn in the music industry. Not only to they remember the lyrics by heart, but they also repeat it. They understand the words and the message being conveyed and eventually act according to what they think is the correct way to behave. Thus, rap music becomes a socialisation agent. This affects both genders. The young women might see themselves as victims. Moreover, they might eventually accept the views which are being projected about them. Young men on the other hand, tend to appropriate to themselves a sexist and misogynistic behaviour and lifestyle, believing that this will be the only way through which they will be able to fit in (Adams and Fuller, 2006:
