In the story “Two Ways to Belong in America” the two main characters, Mira and Bharati had their goals, expectations, and appreciate for what they wish to accomplish in their lives in America. The narrator says, The sisters plans where to stay in America for two years, then return to India to marry of their fathers choosing (Mukherjee 404). Just like anyone else plans in this world; naturally, plans change and new plans occur. As a result, coming to America for the characters made a huge change in their lives even though the characters did not plan to stay as long as they intended. Families are all different in their own ways. For instance, everyone has their own ways of handling things, for the good and the bad. It does not matter where the family is from, the way the family does things works for them. Family will always be family no matter what the circumstances are. For an example, when there is a difficult time within the family some may get stressed and take it out on others. On the other hand, others may lock everyone else out and want to keep to themselves. Others may like to surround themselves with other people who they love. Every person is different and family will except that no matter what has happened. In the story “Two Ways to Belong in America” the characters show that no matter what has happened in their trip to America their family will always love and care for them.
