As far as intelligence agencies go, there are a few that are common household names, like the CIA, NSA, and the FBI. Another agency that is still a major player, and has recently been the subject of much discussion and controversy is the DIA . The reason for this controversy and debate is because many people, both inside and outside of the IC , view the DIA as an agency that is no longer necessary within the IC. Although the DIA has shifted its focus in recent years, crossing over significantly into the realm of intelligence that is currently being covered by other organizations, they still have a very vital role as an organization within the IC. This posed a major issue for the military intelligence community during that time. Due to the lack of cohesion and central filter of collected data, there were clear divisions, separating each of the military branches from one another in the field of intelligence. This caused a general lack in efficiency in the information that was produced. This expansion now led the DIA to include counterterrorism and nuclear proliferation (Levy, 2011), which was a big step away from the “force-on-force” type of military intelligence it previously focused on. This led to a gradual shift in focus, and their role began to overlap the roles of several other agencies, especially the CIA. The line between the DIA and CIA, which was previously defined, began to blur.
