Rome’s army was an incredible force, crucial to the empire’s domination of the Mediterranean, and the land beyond, with a dominant navy, military prowess, and geopolitical power to support its power. Most of the Roman Empire’s victory over the Mediterranean can be attributed to the military’s strength in combat, as well as the geopolitical advantages. Through the strength of its military forces, the Roman Empire was able to conquer the Mediterranean and nations in the surrounding territory.

Maintaining the empire put strains on Rome, with its generals ambitiously searching for new lands to conquer and plunder, in their quest for glory. One such figure was Julius Caesar, who conquered land further north, by defeating the Celts in what is present-day France. The remainder of North African territory would fall under the rule of Rome, giving the empire most control over the Western Mediterranean.
Even with significant control of land, the Romans were not content with control of land near to them. They believed that the land further away might have riches that would make them even wealthier. The more powerful and wealthier they became, the further they could expand the Roman Empire. Many of the nations that were conquered benefitted from the Roman way of life that was imposed on them.
