Miles Ahead successfully takes its viewers into Miles Davis’s shoes. Miles Davis was born in 20’s and left a large mark on the world as legendary jazz trumpeter and composer. This movie is set in the late ‘70s and makes it a point to strategically take its viewers to numerous parts of Davis’s life. Miles Ahead peals the layers off Davis, showing both his inner demons and humorous character. Taking its viewers to both the blissful and dark points in Davis’s love life. In addition to entering the jagged timeline of his musical career. Having had the creative brilliance and improvisational magic which brought so much fame to Davis’s life, it was both a vice and virtue during this movie. Although Davis had many esteemed nick names, he primarily comes off as “The Prince of darkness” during this movie. Although Miles did not grow up poor like the stereotypical black jazz musician. It did not spare him the unnecessary racism. One scene that stuck out to me was when Davis was leaving the venue he performed in and respectfully walks a woman out to her cab. But for no correct reason, a policeman begins to rattle Davis up. Suddenly, the cop hits Davis and arrests him for, “loitering”. The viewers can clearly tell this was a purely racist move and Davis was innocent. It seemed hard to understand that even though Davis was a well-known musical genius, the hatred of racism was very apparent and some people couldn’t put their differences aside. Nonetheless, there were examples of those who did not let racism cloud their judgment. For instance, ironically Davis’s sidekick throughout the movie was a white journalist who wants to do his comeback story for the Rolling Stones.
