The version of A Midsummer Night's Dream that I watched was a movie released in 1969; it was directed by Sir Peter Hall and stared Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, and Ian Holm. I enjoyed the movie because it brought the chaos of the play within a play, the mischievous fairies, and the dynamic between the lovers to life. It was difficult for me to imagine everything that was going on in A Midsummer Night’s Dream due to the jumping around of characters and scenes. Love’s many aspects, especially young love, tend to be fleeting and hectic by nature. The movie and the play show this via the intervention of the fairies and their potion to Hermia and Lysander’s relationship, along with Helena and Demetrius. The potion causes a rapid change of heart which represents love’s fickle nature. The relationship between the king and queen of the fairies shows how love can be both cruel and forgiving. The cruel joke the king played on the queen due to his anger caused the queen to fall in love with an ass, but by the end of the movie and play, the king had forgiven the queen and they were loving and happy
