In archaeology, Middle Range Theory is the linkage of natural processes and human behavior to physical remains in a archaeological record. The abstract idea of Middle Range Theory in archaeology has become very influential to researchers. Many researchers have suggested that Middle Range Theory has played a major role in the development of the discipline of theory. Before being introduced in archaeology, Middle Range Theory was a term used in sociology. Archaeology researchers used the Middle Range Theory in different ways. Middle Range Theory has advantages and dangerous disadvantages. Middle Range Theory is used by archaeologist as a bridge that connects systemic and archaeological contexts. These unified contextes soon became generalizations of human behavior and material culture in the archaeological record. Two researchers whom we discussed in class disagreed on the use of Middle Range Theory. Schiffer and Binford had different opinions on how MRT should be processed and used in Archaeological research. Some researchers believe that Middle Range Theory could increase the theoretical coverage in archaeology. Middle Range Theory causes archaeologist to come up with more general theories for their research which explained to be an advantage. Archaeology researchers says that Middle Range Theory gives archaeologist the ability to surpass any description and experimental observations. Another advantage that was mentioned was the fact that Middle Range Theory could allow them to gather different groups of analysis, viewpoints, and even developments when coming up with a new theory.
