THEORY EVALUATION PAPER
The nursing theories explain the rigorous and imaginative arrangement of ideas to ensure their presentation serve the systematic review purpose for anything that takes place. There are several nursing theories engraved in the nursing practice, ranging from the grand nursing to the mid-range theories. This study will focus on the mid-range theories since it has a narrow scope when compared to the grand nursing. The mid-range theory has an efficient connection in the nursing practice, providing the propositions and concepts, strategies and the theory-based methods.
The mid-range theory utilizes the predictions, explanations as well as descriptions that help in answering specific queries in the nursing practice. In addition,

The leadership in nursing is obligated to identify the proper skill mix and administer the registered nurses who are in a position to ensure quality care and delivery of services. Due to this reason, an effective nursing model should assume the approach that is aware of the uniqueness of the patient care setting at various times throughout the year (Alligood, 2017). The model should include items such as education and training, patient acuity as well as the assistive personnel. In order to address the nursing shortage in the nation, the nursing leadership needs to utilize the financially based retention and the recruitment initiatives (Sitzman & Watson, 2018). The nursing leadership should consider applying the Watson’s theory of human caring to address the nursing shortage since it offers significant insights and solutions. The highlighted solutions may help the managers, administrators, and managers to deliver the necessary care and consider the nurse professionals as a valuable resource that who will help to improve the outcome of the …show more content…
Other factors to support the principles of the Watson’s theory include building trust and help and the acceptance and promotion of the positive and negative feelings (Chinn & Kramer, 2005). The systematic utilization of the problem solving caring, together with the enhancement of transpersonal teaching and learning determine the effectiveness of the theory. In addition, it involves the phenomenological factors as well as the existence spiritual
Nursing theories are based on four meta-paradigms which are commonly accepted in the nursing profession. These include nursing, person, health, and environment. These meta-paradigms are represented in Dr. Barnard’s Nursing PCI
Three types of middle range theories are descriptive, theories that are at the most basic level. These theories classify and may contain one or more concepts that may have many commonalities but do not attempt to explain the relationship to another. Descriptive theories are usually found with discrete observations in associations with individuals, groups, situations or events. An example of a middle range descriptive theory is, Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations (Nursing Theories, 2013) In Peplau’s theory observations are titled and categorized by what is happening at that moment.

One of the problems that faces most health care facilities are being able to recruit and retain their nurses. Nursing shortage and turnover are a complex issue that is affecting healthcare delivery. Nurses form the majority in healthcare and mostly direct caregivers, its deficit poses a dangerous effect on the care of the sick and the disabled. Curbing the nursing shortage and turnover is important for facilities to hire and train their leaders and managers. A good leader or manager should be creative, effective, committed, initiative, motivated, and can handle stress (Huber,
Nursing theories developed by scientists provide a framework for the process of establishing nursing as a profession with a specific body of knowledge including nursing language, and nurse is able to communicate inside in and outside of the profession. Theory supports and defines nursing practice and is used in practice situation to provide solution to the problem, provides guidelines in patient’s quality care, and helps to resolve nursing challenges. The benefits of middle-range theories found primarily in the research studies to address particular client population, in education, patient
Watson views the concept of a human being as a person that should be valued, cared for, respected, nurtured, understood, and assisted (Nursing Theories, 2012). Every human being should be treated as a person instead of an object and receive the opportunity to have their distinct needs cared for. Health is viewed as a high level of physical, mental, and social functioning, ability to adapt and maintenance with daily living, and the lack of illness or the efforts that lead to the lack of (Nursing Theories, 2012). Watson’s theory believes that the environment determines the values that influence your behaviors and the goals you wish to pursue. It also influences how well a patient copes with the situation and how the nurse should be supportive and considerate towards the patient. Watson defines nursing as “a human science of persons and human health-illness experiences that are mediated by professional, personal, scientific, esthetic and ethical human transactions” (Nursing Theories, 2012, para. 4). Nursing should be more than just providing medical care, it should establish a relationship and build trust. Watson’s other concepts of her theory include the caring occasion, transpersonal caring, phenomenal field, self, and

The grand theory to be analyzed in this paper is Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT). The method used to analyze Dorothea Orem’s theory is Walker and Avant Theory Analysis (WAT). Theory analysis is a process of evaluating a nursing theory. The WAT is comprised of seven steps. The steps are defining the origins, meaning, logic, usefulness, details, structure and testability of the theory (McEwen & Wills, 2011). “Critical reflection of a theory determines how well the theory serves its purpose” (McEwen & Wills, 2011, p.95). Therefore, a critical reflection will be applied to the SCDNT. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and critique the SCDNT using the WAT method of theory analysis.
Theory’s responsibility is to provide nurses with standards that reinforce practice, as well as, for future nursing understanding and delivery. Basically, it provides nursing professionals with a tested way of thought on how to handle certain situations with proven results. The importance of nursing theories to nursing research is the knowledge offered gives nurses the foundation for communicating with others and best practice. Middle range theory according to McEwen & Wills (2011, p 35) are theories that have concrete concepts, that are specific, incorporate a measured number of concepts and characteristics of the real world and are tested for accuracy.
One of which being the middle range nursing theories. Middle range theories often evolve from grand theories, clinical practice, or literature review, and are expounded upon for further knowledge. Smith and Liehr (2008) defined middle range theories as “a set of related ideas that are focused on a limited dimension of reality of nursing [. . . ] composed of concepts and suggested relationships among the concepts depicted in a model” (xvii).
Jean Watson’s theory was first published in 1979. Later Watson explained that this work was an attempt to solve some conceptual and empirical problems, with no intention to create a theory. This theory was expanded and formalized in her next book in 1985. Since then, Watson continued to refine her ideas through various publications. At his time, the major conceptual elements of the theory are ten Clinical Caritas Processes (originally Carative factors), Transpersonal Caring Relationship, Caring Moment/Occasion and Caring Consciousness. According to Watson’s theory, the human care process is performed through a Transpersonal Caring Relationship guided by the Carative factors, which are based on humanistic – altruistic value system.
To make good nursing decisions, nurses require an internal roadmap with knowledge of nursing theories. Nursing theories, models, and frameworks play a significant role in nursing, and they are created to focus on meeting the client’s needs for nursing care. According to McEwen and Wills (2014), conceptual models and theories could create mechanisms, guide nurses to communicate better, and provide a “systematic means of collecting data to describe, explain, and predict” about nursing and its practice (p. 25). Most of the theories have some common concepts; others may differ from one theory to other. This paper will evaluate two nursing theorists’ main theories include Sister Callista Roy’s
According to nursingjounrnal (2005) Middle range theories are applicable to each aspect of the nurse profession from administration, education, and direct patient care. Since middle range theory lie between grand theory and specific situation theory. Most nurses believed that middle range theory intervention are more specific on solving problem and if implemented at the bedside as intended they will always bring positive outcomes to the patients . The focus on improved patient outcome and patient satisfaction will be the future development in nurse theory and middle range theories lend to this development. Evidence based practice developed through the use of research studies and theory will lead the nurse in to the future practice. According to Meleis (2012) “Middle-range theories are at those levels of conceptualization that could inform nursing practice and research, and thus continue the cycle of advancing foundational knowledge and enhancing quality care”. To understand responses to health and
“Theory arises out of practice and, once validated, returns to direct or explain that practice and that further practice under guidance of a given theory leads to theory refinement” (Ingram, 1991, p.352). Nursing theory is like trail and error. “The use of nursing theory leads to coordinated and less fragmented care” (McEwen and Wills, 2014, p.25). Theory in nursing helps improve nursing practice problems, by setting goals guided by ideas and facts collected. According to McEwen and Wills (2014), “It was believed that conceptual models and theories could create mechanism by which nurses would communicate their professional convictions, provide a moral/ethical structure to guide actions, and foster a means of systematic thinking about nursing and its practice” (p.25).
