When Michael Jeffrey Jordan tried out for his high school varsity basketball team, he was cut. Even with this obstacle, Michael Jordan became one of the best basketball players ever. His story shows that no matter what gets in life’s way, there is always a way to be successful. From being an extremely distracted and unmotivated child, to dominating in high school and college, all the way to reigning dominance of the entire NBA.

Michael Jordan was never able to devote himself to a job with consistent hours and could only work when he felt like it. Michael would put all of his time and energy into sports and other school activities with friends. He also could only think about sports and being active and was not great in school either. The Jordan family is very short, with Michael’s mom being 5’5” and his dad being 5’9”. Considering Michael is 6’6”, he got pretty lucky because the rest of his family was also short, with the tallest person being only six feet (American Decades). Nobody else in Michael Jordan’s family played sports or was even interested in sports, besides Michael’s sports games. Because of the Jordan family being so short and being uninvolved in sports, Michael was not expected to succeed in his sports career. Michael was born on February 17, 1963 in Cumberland Hospital, which is now a homeless shelter and critics say that it is among the worst homeless shelters in New York (Morrissey). He was highly recruited and had offers from Duke, South Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia and many more schools, but he decided to go to UNC. In his three year college career at the University of North Carolina, or UNC, Jordan averaged 17.7 points per game, 1.7 steals per game, 1.8 assists per game, and 5 rebounds per game. Him and his team won the national championship for the 1981-82 season. Jordan won ACC rookie of the year in 1982, AP college basketball player of the year in 1984, was put on the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 1982, and many more (American Decades). Going into the NBA Draft after the 1984 season, Michael Jordan was drafted third overall by the Chicago Bulls, behind Akeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie. After being drafted, in his rookie year, Michael averaged 28.2 points per game, 2.4 steals per game, 5.9 assists per game, and 6.5 rebounds per game. After dominating for eight more seasons after that, Michael wanted to pursue a career in professional baseball. Michael was not as good as baseball, so he was only able to play minor league baseball for the Birmingham Barons (American Decades). After being unsuccessful in baseball, Jordan came back for four more seasons in the NBA and toned down but was still dominating over everyone else.
