I remember when I first saw Michael Jackson sing and dance, he made me want to be an entertainer. I also remember when I first heard Tupac Shakur rap on the radio which made me learn to express my feelings through poetry. These two artists made me feel energy that sparked a smile at the sound of their voices. Their music and style was motivation for me to be just like them; different. Michael Jackson being the lead of his brothers in a singing group since the age of four years old, and Tupac being a solo rapper that sold over 75 million records at the age of twenty-five, made me realize that one can shine with or without others. Born August 29,1958 of parents Katherine and Joe Jackson with nine siblings, Michael Jackson grew up in Gary, Indiana. Father Joe Jackson being a musician earlier on in life, heard his sons sing and decided to place them in a music group at very young ages. As Michael wrote in his book “Moonwalk”, Joe would force them to perform on sick days and also inside inappropriate places. When not locked in dressing rooms by Joe, Michael would soak it all in. In the corner of a hall way watching strippers perform, Mother Katherine would argue that this was no life for young boys and that it would lead to a scary future for young Michael; indeed, it did. After separating from the brother based music group in 1972, Michael would go on to make some of the world’s most memorable albums, leaving him to support his family because they had now lost their star bread winner. It was said that Michael was teased by his siblings about his nose and weight. Michael Jackson had also developed a skin disorder known as skin pigmentation. Taking care of his family and changing things about his physical form took an emotional toll on the rising pop singer.
