Poverty is very barbaric when hitting Central Mexico. Whether it be elders to young children who wake up with empty stomachs. Or people who have to make a living with only little money and struggle to take care of themselves and their families. If you had to wake up and “look forward” to yet another day without food, how would you feel? It was classified that over 58 million Mexicans live below the poverty line, and the government has identified 11.7 million living in extreme poverty and deprivation.

Esther Duflo also talks about poverty in a couple different ways through the following reasons; immunization, education, and doing something to stop poverty can really change the world. Firstly, Esther Duflo believes that immunization can help with poverty. It can help because immunization is the cheapest way to save a child's life and can help prevent Malaria, deworm children, and give poor people lentils to live on. With immunization, it can save a life for 300 dollars per life. Next, Esther Duflo explains that education can help defeat poverty globally as well.

Every now and then, the one country situated in the northern part of America where everyone in the world wants to come and settle down to their life. It is the U.S.A. The U.S. is the place where the “American Dream” was born. If you work hard enough in this few barriers country, you will achieve the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility for your own family and children. However, that dream is now long gone forgotten because there is now a problem called “child poverty” that has been weighed down the entire U.S. society. So why does child poverty exists in the U.S.? Simple because their parents are poor, and those parents do not have enough resources to nurture their children as a standard citizen of a developed country. Texas has had a consistent poverty problem. According to the Texas Tribune, 17.2 percent of Texas’ population was still living in poverty as of 2014 compared to the 15% national average. Even though 58% of poor households are employed. Fortunately Texas provides many social services and welfare programs to help those in poverty such as TANF, Medicaid, and SNAP.
Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. When considering the topic of poverty and hunger, many Americans look outside the borders of the United States. However, food insecurity is an issue that plagues millions of American households each year. The United States Department of Agriculture found that 14.5% of American households faced food insecurity during 2012. These households were defined as having “difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources” (Nord, Singh, Coleman-Jensen).

What is poverty? What do we think the real definition of poverty is? As humans, we always complain about the small things in life, but what about the people who live in Peña Blanca? What do they have to say about their daily struggles just to earn a simple grain of rice? As some people say, poverty is a beast that cannot be beaten. The people of Peña Blanca suffer from extreme poverty, and yet, they are willing to give or offer anything to the people in urgent need or need help, which what instantly caught my attention. Their generosity was unexplainable. An example of this in the movie is when a man reported that his wife is going to die because he doesn't have enough money to pay for medicine since she’s extremely bedridden, and then Anthony, a fellow neighbor, offered his money to pay for the medicine, even though that would affect him negatively since his family are also extremely poor . Poverty has played a major role in these people’s lives, making everything a challenge.
Children represent a disproportionate share of the poor in the United States; they are 23.1 percent of the total population, but 33.3 percent of the poor population. In 2014, 15.5 million children, or 21.1 percent, were poor. Poverty can shape a life of a child and leave them with feelings of hopelessness and unworthiness. There are also specific ethnic and race groups whose children are affected by poverty than others.
In 1990, Schwarz (1990) stated about one in five American families lived beneath the poverty line. According Lein (2013), it is estimated that as of the beginning of 2011, about 1.46 million U.S. households with about 2.8 million children were surviving on $2 or less in income per person per day in a given month. This constitutes almost 20 percent of all non-elderly households with children living in poverty. About 866,000 households appear to live in extreme poverty across a full calendar quarter. The prevalence of extreme poverty rose sharply between 1996 and 2011(Lein, 2013).
In both the cases of children living on less than $18,000 a year and less than $2 a day, the children do not have enough support to survive adequately. Poverty extends across all continents, making it the most widespread negative factor. Out of the world’s 2.2 billion children, approximately half live in poverty, according to UNICEF. Poverty claims approximately 22,000 children’s lives per day. This statistic illustrates the struggle children living in poverty must face in order to survive.
Gans (1971) stated in modern society there are few events that can be considered functional or dysfunctional for society, and that most events result in benefits to some groups, while they present a cost to other groups. Poverty provides a great example of the negative impact on one group of society while providing benefits to another group in society. “All human endeavors have benefits and costs, material and nonmaterial, and that most such endeavors produce benefits for some people and groups and reparations for others. Even some of the most costly social evils benefit someone” (Gans, 2012). Poverty provides numerous benefits for the wealthy. However, the poor can also benefit from the wealthy.
I am pretty certain that no one in this room can imagine not being able to provide their family with food on a daily basis. There are people throughout the world who eat what we eat in one week for almost months. Some even have to walk several miles just to retrieve water that is not sanitary to drink. It bothers us to think about these things but there are so many families living in these conditions as I speak. Many of you may be thinking that you cannot do anything about this, but I am here today to tell you can!
