STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Diabetes Among Hispanic Communities The presence of diabetes in older Hispanics is on the rise, with limited access to medical health care, minority groups that arrive in the United States from another country face the challenge of assimilating to this country while also dealing with the disease. Older Hispanics are more vulnerable when it comes to diabetes due to chronic diseases like obesity and hypertension they are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes compared to non-Hispanic whites. Type II diabetes has become an epidemic. It affects more than 29 million people in the United States it and has become a major health and social problem (Valencia, Oropesa-Gonzalez, Hogue, et.al, 2014). Diabetes is a disease that can happen at any age. Diabetes can be reversed or controlled; however, there is no cure for it. As people age, the possibility of being diagnosed with diabetes, increases due to the physical changes in the body and personal behaviors (Valencia, Oropesa-Gonzalez, Hogue, et.al, 2014). Lack of access to medical care and inequality in social, economic, and cultural factors can contribute to Hispanics having prevalence rates of diabetes. Hispanics may seek alternative treatment to their medical condition rather than standard medical care. Some may seek curanderos (folk healer) because of barriers to medical access or simply because of cultural factors (Caban, 2006). According to Caban (2006), researching the Hispanic populations in different communities, who are currently living with diabetes, will help both researchers and clinicians better understand and meet the needs of this population. This will help to avoid generalizing all Hispanics living with diabetes as the same. There is diversity among Hispanics and cultural perspectives about living and dealing with the disease may vary.
