Unfortunately, not all of us are able to visit the world’s most amazing museums which showcase all of our favorite artist. Luckily, museums now have the ability to showcase their current masterpieces in stock online. In this essay, we will describe, analyze, and interpret three of my favorite masterpieces currently being showcased in three different museums. The first masterpiece that will be discussed is being displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and is titled, “Wheat Field with Cypresses” by, Vincent van Gogh in 1889. Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter, this particular piece was painted at a mental institution near Arles, France using oil on canvas. Delacroix created this masterpiece during the Age of Enlightenment, and is characterized as Historical academic piece. The painting was painted with oil on canvas in Paris. “Liberty Leading the People” depicts a woman known as a figure of liberty, leading people over the fallen bodies of war holding a French flag. If you look closely, one can see a mixture of social classes amongst the soldiers. Interesting enough, is that the painting is supposed to commemorate the French 1830 July revolution. During my analysis of the painting, I found that the painting to have a great direction of movement, and correctly scaled characters. In this case, the paint used for the masterpiece is local, reflecting hues found under normal lighting conditions. “Liberty Leading the People” has been interpreted as the end of the “Age of Revolution” and the start of the Romantic Era. Critiques also argue that Delacroix himself must have felt he had a patriotic duty to depict the violent battle in his own way. In my personal judgment I absolutely find this piece to be a masterpiece. The painting is filled with emotion, violence, and patriotic glory.
