The differences between early civilizations are very important because it tells a lot about today’s societies. Two of these civilizations created and shaped today’s world. Mesopotamia began around 3500 B.C.E. in the Tigris and Euphrates River. Egypt began around 5500 B.C.E. as two kingdoms in the Nile River, but around 3200 B.C.E. the kingdoms unified. Both civilizations had many similarities within their social and political affairs, and they also had a variety of differences between each of them. Mesopotamia and Egypt were very alike socially in their societies. They had a social class that they followed; Mesopotamia had kings and priests much like Egypt. Social class was very important back then because many laws would change depending on what class you are in. Mesopotamia and Egypt both believed in polytheism, they believed in more than one god in their religion. They both worshiped different gods and goddesses like: Ishtar, Adad, and Marduk for Mesopotamia; Re and Osiris were gods from the Egyptian civilization. These civilizations both created irrigation and some type of calendar and numbering system. Both of the civilization’s governments were connected with religion. Depending on their beliefs the law may be affected differently like in Mesopotamia you were able to get away from your punishment if you jumped in the river and survive because they believed that if someone were to jump in the river and survive that means the gods want them to live. Their writing system was also similar because they both used symbols for their letters. Their government had power over their people and females were allowed to rule the people like Cleopatra who is well known to have ruled Egypt. These civilizations weren’t always so similar; they had many differences
