Mental toughness is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the world of sports, yet one of the key components in an athlete’s success out on the field. Mental imagery is a component that meshes well with mental toughness as it is the innate ability to envision tasks before taking place and mental toughness is the ability to keep emotions in check, control behavior, and maintain relaxation and focus while in game situations. Combining these two components are essential for an athlete’s athletic success. Many athletes experience anxiety prior to and during game situations so it very important that they develop coping skills to be able to deal with these situations in the proper way. The ability to work through adversity has been around for many years and with continued research there are more ways being discovered that can enhance success. “It is unfortunate that the concept of mental toughness has lacked clarity, because it has been expressed by both coaches and players to be one of the most vital approaches to performance excellence (Weinberg, Butt & Culp, 2011). Being able to recognize faults within one’s performance and taking personal responsibility and having the self-confidence to accept shortcomings while correcting the issues is important as well in having strong mental toughness. In one particular study there were 10 college head coaches (5 male, 5 female) from the U.S. from various sports who participated. The coaches had a combined number of 119 years coaching. The coaches were selected based on their credentials. They were also only interviewed if they intentionally tried to instill mental toughness in their players. Based upon the coach’s responses’ to the questions, it was determined that “mental toughness is a quality that is recognized and considered in the recruitment of athletes” (Weinberg, Butt & Culp, 2011). Another study evaluated the connection between mental toughness and psychological methods in game situations. There were 67 males and 40 females averaging between 21-22 years of age completed the MTQ48 (Clough et al., 2002) questionnaire calculating mental toughness and TOPS (Thomas et al., 1999) to calculate the psychological methods. The results acknowledged that emotion regulation, self-talk, and relaxation methods were considerably and undoubtedly connected to mental toughness within practice and game situations (Crust & Azadi, 2010).
