This essay will explore the concept and definition of equality, diversity and human right in relation to mental health settings. It will focus on potential barriers on poor engagement of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups with mental health care settings. Joint Commissioning Panel for Mental Health (JCPMH), (2014) described BAME groups as people who are residents in United Kingdom but are nominated as being part of a non-white group. This essay will also explore on bridging the language barriers, issues in providing an interpreter for individual who are non-English speaker accessing the mental health services. Equality is a legal framework that can be used to protect individual against discrimination, it nurtures moral relations and supports equality of prospects among individuals with protected characteristics. Department of health (DH), (2009) also defined equality as being able to have equal access, equal treatment, equal outcomes and equal opportunities. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) also analyse some inequalities in the unequal treatment challenging ethnic and racial differences in health care which revealed that BAME of different backgrounds often experienced different levels of care even when all other factors such as wellbeing, salary, and insurance protection remained equal (Harmsen et al,2008). Improving high quality service user care could lessen the gaps in the quality of care of patient - centred health care is dependent on health providers ability by understanding patients’ needs, be an active listener and ensuring the service user understand the health professionals advise
