Mental Health Counseling
Mental health counseling involves counseling people who are struggling to cope with events in their lives. These events may be traumatic, family issues, substance abuse, and other difficult experiences. There are different kinds of mental health counseling. Mental health professionals can work in different places like schools, hospitals, and client’s homes. Counselors offer help to different ages of patients from children to elderly.
The most common types of mental health counseling are: guidance counseling, substance abuse counseling, educational counseling, rehabilitation counseling, marriage counseling, and family counseling. Some can run from thirty minutes to an hour or more. Different types of counseling counselings can take different amounts of time; for example, substance abuse counseling may take longer than educational counseling. There are several personality traits critical for this career. Good listening skills, great communication, social skills, and empathy are all keys to success. Empathy is important for the client's feelings and emotions. The communications skills are needed so you can properly talk with the patient, and talk through their feelings. Listening skills are necessary to hear out the client’s and make them feel as though they are understood. General social skills are also important in helping the client can feel safe and comfortable. Overall becoming a mental health counselor can be a rewarding career choice. This profession offers good salaries and flexibility with work location and schedule. There can be downsides to this job; it can be dangerous and stressful. If choosing this career, a person will need strong skills including empathy, communication, social skills, and great listening skills.
