American-style football is one of the most beloved sports in the US, attracting millions with its display of teamwork and athleticism (Jones, 2024). However, beyond the thrill of the game lies underlying challenges, particularly to the mental health of its participants. In recent years, research has shed light on the elaborate interplay between American football and the players' mental well-being, revealing a complex sense of risk factors, consequences, and potential interventions (Vogt, 2023). Mental health disorders are illnesses that affect your mood, thinking, and behaviors. Some examples of mental illness are depression, anxiety disorders, and addictive behaviors (Mayo, 2022). CTE can lead to cognitive decline or dementia (Mayo, 2023). While, if you leave mental illnesses untreated they can worsen over time which can lead to impairment in function and a decrease in quality of life (Turnbridge, 2021). Head injury prevention includes, but is not limited to, proper equipment use and education on recognizing and responding to concussions promptly (Shaner, 2022). Mental illness prevention focuses on promoting mental health awareness and access to mental health resources within the sport (NCAA, 2024). Head injuries are sometimes dismissed in sports, leading to underreporting and little to no treatment (NCAA, 2024). While mental illnesses lead to shame and worry, seek help (HealthDirect, 2023). The gaps in the research are better ways to prevent head injuries and how it would in turn help football players' mental health in the years to follow.
