After reading Chapter 1 I was met up with many questions: why are we afraid of those with mental disorders? Who told us that to be different was a disease? How did we decide that this reality was the right way so many years ago? How does our timeline with mental illness jump from humane compassion to rotting cells of people being mistreated? How can we continue to ignore the homeless problem in the world today and deny that we can help those who are suffering? As an idealist, I found the chapter both eye opening and stomach jerking. Especially after watching the videos on lobotomy’s I questioned who the hell gave that guy an ice pick! This book was brilliant. There were moments that made me laugh, moments that made me tremble in my chair, moments that made me cry, moments that melted my heart, and moments that made me want to rip my hair out at the roots. This book has it all, and it delivers it through a cold but much needed message.
In the book “The Mad Among Us-A History of the Care of American’s Mentally Ill,” the author Gerald Grob, tells a very detailed accounting of how our mental health system in the United States has struggled to understand and treat the mentally ill population. It covers the many different approaches that leaders in the field of mental health at the time used but reading it was like trying to read a food label. It is regurgitated in a manner that while all of the facts are there, it lacks any sense humanity. While this may be more of a comment on the author or the style of the author, it also is telling of the method in which much of the policy and practice has come to be. It is hard to put together without some sense of a story to support the action.
...nd institutions are made today. The book made me change my outlook on placing people into this homes for many different reasons. Even though I feel like nursing homes are not as bad as ILLC, I do know that they place a discrimination and place ableism on these people. Overall, this book has opened my eyes to many different things and has shown me that even though we think the world is good, there are “bad kings” out there too.
As medical advances are being made, it makes the treating of diseases easier and easier. Mental hospitals have changed the way the treat a patient’s illness considerably compared to the hospital described in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Agoraphobia is derived from the Greek words agora, meaning “gathering place” or “assembly” which was used to describe a city’s marketplace, and phobia meaning “fear.” It literally means "fear of the marketplace." Carl Westphal first coined the term “agoraphobia” in 1871 to describe people who were afraid of large open spaces. Since then, the definition of agoraphobia has been modified and continues to develop as more research is done. (Barlow, 2002, p. 328) The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM–5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) defines the essential trait of agoraphobia as "marked, or intense, fear or anxiety triggered by the real or anticipated exposure to a wide range of situations." This book was a good read for me, but I also read book reviews to help me keep track on what I am reading. These book reviews just made a better understanding of what I was reading.
Assessing and determining a mental health diagnosis can be difficult because many of the disorders have similar presenting symptoms. In addition, a client may not outwardly present symptoms, therefore, the only way to detect them involves using a scale. Finding a reliable and valid scale that determines whether an individual meets the diagnostic criteria can be very useful. The DSM-5 is important in the diagnosis of dissociative disorder. The application of the tool has advantages and disadvantages depending on the specific individual and environment.
To diagnose a substance use disorders, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition (DSM 5) uses a pattern of behaviors based on eleven criteria. These criteria have been broken into four groupings: impaired control (criteria 1-4); social impairment (criteria 5-7); risky use (criteria 8-9); and pharmacological criteria (criteria 10-11) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Although grouped together, each criteria has its own focus.
I chose to be a psychiatrist for this career project. I chose to be a psychiatrist because I've always had an interest in the brain and mental health. Although, according to the article, around the 3rd century B.C.E, the Greeks changed how people viewed mental disorders. Hippocrates (philosopher and physician) found out that the mental illness is caused by chemicals in your brain. Everything happens naturally, which pushed Hippocrates to help find a solution. They worked together to try and fix these imbalances by using techniques like, phlebotomies, bloodletting,purging, and forcing diets on the people that needed it. Many other cultures realized that they have been doing it all wrong too, and began using Hippocrates techniques as well. Although, some cultures still believed in the old ways of treating mental illness, and that is was caused by supernatural forces. Which lead cultures to continue to drill holes in mentally ill patients. I found every last word very interesting about this article and I really enjoyed learning things I didn’t know
Mental Illness is a condition that is distinguish by the interference in an individual’s thoughts, emotions,or behavior. Mental Illness has a extensive range of disorders, differ from those that origin from mild to those that harm a person’s ability to function in life. According to the biological perspective, mental illness is a bodily process, which means the process is in the body to be exact “respiratory activity”. In the other hand the psychological perspective, believe that how a person was raised during childhood from its parents play a major role. As well environment can be one of the cause for mental health in our society. Im my opinion we have overlooked mental illness, even though we have improve treatments for mental illness over the years. We can take different approaches in how mental illness is deal today.
I liked this book because it shows a part of society which is usually kept hidden. Many people think schizophrenia is just a form retardation, but this book gives you a small amount of understanding for people with this disorder.

But by looking at Frankl and examining what he has to say about the meaning of life, suffering, love, frustration, boredom, tension, etc, I have rally gained a lot of knowledge that almost is common sense. If you sit and take the time to read the material through thoroughly you can see exactly where he is coming from. He’ll take a difficult situation, such as suffering, and turn it completely around. As far as suffering goes I try to do the same thing, in a way. When Mark Felice died last October it crushed me. But I tried to look at the positive side and say well, his suffering is over and he was here to teach us how to live to be stronger and better people. Through our suffering, over the loss of his life, we ended his suffering. This is kind of what Frankl does, he turns things around and makes you view things from a different perspective. I like his way of thinking because it’s not always something that I would think of off the top of my head. Overall, I enjoyed the book although it was difficult at times to read, but I think I gained knowledge from it and see different ways to look at things now.
