Meningitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord known as “meninges”. The inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. There are several types of meningitis. The most common is viral meningitis, which you get when virus enters the body through the nose or mouth and travel to the brain. Bacterial meningitis is rare, but can be deadly. It usually starts with bacteria that cause a cold-like infection. It can block blood vessels in the brain and lead to stroke and brain damage. It can also harm other organs. Anyone can get meningitis, but it is more common in people whose bodies have trouble fighting infections. “Meningitis is a potentially life-threatening infection of the meninges, the tough layer of tissue that surrounds the brain and spinal cord” (Mayoclinic.com). If the meningitis cannot treat properly lead to brain swelling and cause permanent disability, coma, and even death. Meningitis can be cause by bacteria, viruses, fungi, reactions to medications, and environmental toxins such as heavy metals. It also caused by physical injury, cancer, and certain drugs.
