I am interested in joining the Medical Career Exploration Program because being part of the program will allow me to interact with different areas of the medical field. This is a valuable chance for me to experience how it is like to be a physician at a prestigious hospital. I hope that my communication skills will continue to grow with the program and assist patients, visitors, and family feel satisfied and proud to be part of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. My trip to Beijing, China and Inner Mongolia in 2012 let me realize how important it is to communicate and interact with people of different backgrounds and culture. I was able to build strong and long lasting friendships with elementary school students and faculties as an international mentor. The biochemistry major has provided me with essential knowledge of professionalism and cautiousness in a medical work space. Working in a hospital requires meticulousness to avoid mistakes that could affect both patients and public safety. My experience in lab settings has proven how vital it is to be detail oriented, especially when dealing with toxic chemicals. These experiences enable me to be well adapted to a health orientated setting. To be given the opportunity of joining the MCEP, I will truly feel and experience what it’ll be like for myself in the future after college. My primary goal is to become a Surgical Technician/Medical Assistant. I've done tons of research on the career and I feel it best suits my interest, my work ethic and my hunger for the expansion of knowledge. I plan on attending VCU for four years, majoring in Bio-Science. After receiving my Bachelors Degree I will exercise my studies and apply them to my future career at any hospital or medical center of my choice at that moment, such as CJW Medical Center (Chippenham Campus), or St.Mary's Hospital and etc. I feel VCU has what I need to succeed because of their very proficient MCV program. The career path that I want to pursue is in the medical field. I major in psychology and minor in biology because going to medical school has always been my desire. Attending Florida Southwestern State College to become an x-ray tech is a huge accomplish for me. Because I have a learning disability unfortunately I have to take remedial courses like intermediate algebra, Brush up English, and a reading course the first semester. The good thing about studying Radiology is you can switch to any type of jobs in this field. For an example, you can switch to working with MRI’s or Cat Scans if you want to try another department in the Radiology field. This specific field is for you to work with x-rays. It’s important to know the bone structure .You can work with ultrasounds to, Cat Scans, to MRI’s (Magnetic resonance imaging).
It was becoming increasing clear to me that the hospital environment was a community that I knew one day I wanted to be a part of. For three summers, I shadowed one emergency room physician who has been an amazing role model and mentor. This exposure taught me not only a plethora of terms, but to think critically and quickly and to prioritize and reason in ways that had immediate benefit. I also learned a great deal about bedside manner, and how important it is to be culturally and emotionally sensitive to patients. Like my family, this physician noticed so many important things about people- who they are and what matters to them. She knew just when to touch someone on the shoulder, or to step back. She accounted for age and class and race and subtleties that don’t even have words. She viewed each patient as a whole person. One night a woman was brought into the ER after a car crash and needed a neurological exam immediately. She was wearing a hijab. This physician kindly addressed the woman and asked her if she wanted the door closed while she took off her hijab. I find myself privileged as I am the first generation from my family to complete Bachelor Degree. Therefore, "reaching perfection through adversity" is what inspired my journey of Physician Assistant studies. I am originally from small South-Asian country called Nepal, where I completed my High School education with science major. As a science student, I was always curious to know the cause, symptoms, prevention, and precaution of diseases. Unconsciously, I was trying to pursue medical profession. I grew up in a research and development campus where my father is a scientist. Research and curiosity were constantly encouraged and this prompted me to take up medicine as a career, a field that offers tremendous prospects for research and discoveries. Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life.
