Every generation has its differences that sets them apart from one another, they vary from war to economic turmoil; for the current generations’ media is the end all be all. Technology has advanced the most throughout generations, with the advancements in technology people have more mediums to access media. Smartphones are the biggest technological advancement. The more recent generation, Generation Z, has grown up with access to smartphones, carrying around the media with them throughout the day. The growth in technology has made the media a central part of our generation, controlling a larger portion of our personal lives. This can be a bad thing because our generation is becoming more addicted to the media, and dependent on technology. It is important that we become media literate and control the amount of media that we intake and how often; which, in this day in age, is harder to do, even elementary students have iPhones and social media webpages. I will cover what defines each generation, and the media effects and influence on technology, family dynamics in the current generation.
Generations have shifted from traditional, the Baby Boomers, to more efficient and interactive; Generations X, Y and Z (Valenzuela 4). Generation Y consists of people born between 1977 and 2000, and is the largest group since the Baby Boomers (Grewal, Levy 152). Generation Z consists of people born between 2001 and 2014 (Grewal, Levy 152). Generations Y and Z are referred to as the digital natives because they were born into a world full of electronics and digital technologies (Grewal, Levy 152). ...on, and the idea of becoming famous for practically nothing like the reality stars. The media displays a picture perfect image on television and generations have built their lives around working to achieve that lifestyle that they see on television (Potter 284).
Our generation’s sees technology as a necessity, while to previous generations the digital technology that we have today was considered a luxury. With the spread of new technology, and the many ways that the internet can be used, people are constantly being exposed to media messages. According to potter “we live in a media saturated generation, which shapes our knowledge patterns, attitudes, emotions, and behaviors” (287). The effects of this constant media exposure is that our generation focuses more on material things, but the positive side is the creativity outlet, and the ability to share and be heard.
