One’s body makes us who we are. What is body image? Body image is how people feel about themselves. Social media today often presents the perfect body to the public, while also promoting “unrealistic standards of beauty” (Pittman). Everyday millions of bone thin models are plastered upon magazines, in television and within movies for the average public to idolize. The media has gone too far, and has greatly impacted the self-portrayal of millions due to their portrayal of what a “good body” looks like. I chose this topic because it is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart. It was written by Dr. Courtney S. Warren..At first glance at this article it may seem that the author is biased because she is a woman however, not only does she include information on the perception of women in the media but she also gives insight from a male’s point of view. Warren begins her article by explaining the gender bias I toys “girls should be princesses dressed in pink tiaras, while boys should be strong, car-loving men of action, dressed in military fatigues.” (Warren) She then describes the way mass media destroys the depiction a person may have about their body. Warren ends her article by asking mass marketing teams and consumers to chage their definition of what a “perfect body” (Warren) should be. As stated in the previous paragraph Dr. Courtney S. Warren wrote this article is an Associate Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Having a background is psychology gives Warren credibility to speak on issues that affect people’s mind’s.. Her background on psycology makes her an expert to speak on this issue. In her article she cites sources from other doctors in her field who have written similar articles, by doing this it shows she has done her homework on this
