Technological advancements created the world in which we live now; where people can efficiently share the latest news and form closer connections with people all over the world through the internet, television, and social apps. Media quickly transformed into an essential and even necessary aspect of human life. Millions around the world utilize and interact with it. The information shared through various media outlets, like Facebook, twitter, news apps etc., shape the way its users view and experience the world. It has become so ingrained into everyday life, that constantly checking and watching the latest news, no matter the media platform, is normal and rarely questioned. Although media offers many advantages, dangers exist as well, one of them being media slant. Research proves that media slant exists, but not many discuss to what extent or whether or not there are consequences. In an interview Charles Sykes, a former conservative, discussed the effects of media bias on republicans (Girdwood and Rezani 2016). He mentioned how through the influence of a conspiracy theorist radio host, Alex Jones, and conservative media, many republicans who listened to his show began to shun all mainstream and liberal media (Girdwood and Rezvani 2016). This shunning prevents them from hearing and accepting views that contradict their own. Considering the bias in the media they do accept and listen to, this places them in a bubble with limited information and skewed perspectives and allows for the perpetuation of fake news (Tucker et al. 2016). Bias may arise intentionally or not, but either way it is imperative that readers, watchers, and listeners are aware when they come in contact with media bias. Although it is unrealistic for the media to be completely objective in every issue they cover, media bias is a prevalent issue in the world today, and will continue on unless consumers of the media become truly educated about the world and its events. This is demonstrated in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, as all forms of media are controlled by the World State, in favor of the World State and the culture they have created.
One of the major problems in the American media today is non-objective reporting which is also known as bias. This has been a trend since the early 1980?s and is very alarming for American citizens who watch the news for truth and honest reporting. Not only has bias been a problem in the broadcast media of ABC, NBC, and CBS, but it has also been a problem in mainstream newspapers such as The New York Times, The Sun, and The Boston Globe. In his show Are You A Biased TV Viewer, Stossel and Goldberg are discussing how mediastream is biased (liberal biased), meaning it’s only one sided. Goldberg wrote a book that was not only very popular, but talked about there being bias in the media and that viewers should be made aware of that. In his interview with Stossel, Goldberg said that the reason news media mainstream is so biased is because of groupthink. According to Goldberg, “ groupthink is when there are too many like minded people making the decisions on what the audience and reader gets to read and see on TV.” So when a news reporter talks about something important that has just occurred or is occurring, and say that they are telling the truth they’re correct. Many people believe that liberal media bias is very relevant in this day in age, but really it is just a myth. Conservatives, also known as republicans, tend to forget that most of the American media is influenced heavily by corporate business owners(Schaller 49). Topics such as issues of war and peace, taxes and spending, and government regulation are heavily favorable to the conservatives. A study done by Media Matter for America shows that over sixty percent of U.S. daily newspapers publish conservative journalists rather than liberal(Schaller 49). News sources in particular can use selective coverage of current or historical events to theoretically slant individuals’ perceptions of them. This type of partisan media also authorizes distinguished members of the favored group to gain increased coverage that helps to spread party preferences to the masses (Davis 277). Personally, I believe the media is more bias today that it was in 2004. As time goes on the news outlets seem to be more increasingly polarized on their focus on politics. A strong argument for a liberal media bias can be made starting with the fact that only 7% of journalist are republican (5 Statistics That Show, 2017). With conservatives being underrepresented in the journalist side of news it can is logical that news stories will be more left leaning than right leaning. The personal biases of those researching news are consistently reflected in the news stories that we see on television and in newspapers.

One of the main reasons is sensitivity to advertisers where news outlets get much of their profits to pay themselves and employees.
