Many people do not know the true meaning of Corrections and Rehabilitation. We all know that it’s the third and final process of the criminal justice system. Many people also think its just punishment for something you done or committed a crime. The true meaning for Corrections and Rehabilitations is to help convicted criminals to return back to society and correct their mistakes they made in the past to not happen again and to be a normal person in society. Corrections and Rehabilitation gets its all of their money by taxpayers or by family or private investors depending on what type of prison it is such as state or private. These questions are some that I wanted to know since my major is criminal justice. It is also helpful for people who are going into Corrections and Rehabilitation to know these question and people should know what is the corrections job is and where the their tax money is going to in the Corrections and Rehabilitation Department. Taxpayers spend so much on paying taxes that they do not even know where their money is going to. According to California State Controller website, it states that about ten percent of the state’s tax revenue goes to into correction, which about eleven billion dollars is going into corrections. That is a lot of money for taxpayer’s money to go to. The state of California pays about six thousand dollars per inmate. Since California prisons are overcrowded the state is wasting tons of money on inmates who are just going to go back into prison. The money that is spends on by tax payer’s money for the inmates Medicare, food, and utilities. Most of the money is mostly on supplying the inmates but not as much as helping them. Like in the beginning, corrections is made to help convicts return back to society. The important word is “help” in order to help we need to provide inmates programs to help them become educated and employed to return back to society. In an article by New York Times called “Out of prison and Deep in Debt”, the Tarlow states that “States are spending a lot of money to keep people in prison” (Out 2). There are already programs helping convicts such as helping them receive their GED or certificates like automotive or painting. In fact a study was done, in a journal called “When offenders return home, how will their families cope?”, states “Offenders who are involved in programs in jails and prisons…offender’s needs such as housing, employment, education, job training, substance abuse treatment, and more will be of primary focus for satisfaction and continuation” (When3). This evidence shows that these programs encourage inmates to have a primary goal own a house and get a job and not return to the streets. Their also many inmates that have substance abuse problems and corrections and rehabilitation do not help them with their problem.
