Peer Influence and Loyalty in 'Mean Girls' and 'Gilgamesh'

In the movie Mean girls, Cady did things she would have never done in her past because she joined a new friend group called the “the Plastics” when she went to a new school. The plastics influenced her to dress different and do different things. This is similar to how loyalty influences the characters in Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is an ancient epic from Mesopotamia based in the city of Uruk. Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk and believes he is the strongest man alive. Enkidu is made for Gilgamesh as his companion and they go on many adventures together. Throughout the epic of Gilgamesh adventure is the main focus, but loyalty influences the characters to change their decision making based on other characters. Gilgamesh demanded that the harlot sleep with the wild man, Enkidu, to make him into a civilized man and she was loyal to Gilgamesh so, she did it. “When you return, a temple prostitute/ will go with you and with her beauty conquer/ the wild man.” (7). Enkidu did the same thing Gilgamesh did to him and told him to continue with the journey, so Gilgamesh did because he is loyal to Gilgamesh. “Let us go back from the mountain, down to the plain./ Let us consider all these things together.” But Enkidu once again told Gilgamesh that the dream he had dreamed that night was fortunate./ So day after day they journeyed on to the Forest,”(24). Gilgamesh is fearful and weeping because of the terrible nightmares he was having. He begged Enkidu to go back down the mountain so that they wouldn’t be harmed, but Enkidu told him no. Enkidu was certain that the dreams Gilgamesh were having were fortunate and that they should continue the journey.
