She is an accomplished poet, performer, actress, director, teacher, and journalist. She has read two inaugural poems and is a three time grammy award winner. She suffered through trials and tribulations, yet has come out on top as a strong, black woman. She is Maya Angelou and her impact on the world impact on the world today sets an example for every race and gender.

Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Ann Johnson, was born on April 4th, 1928. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she was raised there for a short portion of time, then later moved to Stamps, Arkansas. In Arkansas she went through racial discrimination, but still held on to her roots. During her childhood in Arkansas, she went through a tragic event, At the age of seven, she was raped by her mothers boyfriend. Her uncles discovered the crime and killed the man. Maya felt responsible for his death and went mum for five years. During this period of silence, she discovered her love for literature. She read from a variety of different authors such as Langston Hughes, W.E.B Du Bois, Paul Lawrence Dunbar,William Shakespeare, and Edgar Allen Poe. When Maya was twelve, her teacher Mrs.Flowers, - which she spoke about in her autobiographies-broke her out of her shell. After graduating at the top of her 8th grade class, she moved to San Francisco to attend George Washington High School

While in high school, Maya’s love for dance and theater sparked, and she began to take lessons at the California Labor School. She graduated from High School at seventeen and also gave birth to her firstborn, Guy. She scrambled for work at a plethora of jobs, and also performed at clubs and theaters (She came out with an album due to her famous acts in nightclubs in 1957, called Miss Calypso). During th...

She grazed upon the topic of war in her poem, On the Pulse of the Morning, saying to throw down your weapons and also speaking on behalf of fallen nations, and empires due to greed and selfishness. Maya Angelou was also a strong believer in God, which showed throughout her writing, which falls under philosophical branch in the Postmodernist era.,

Angelou has also written children's books, movies and plays along with her poems and autobiographies. She has greatly impacted the Post-Modernist and modern day era with her poems and accomplishments, and is a huge role model. Today she is 85, and is continuing to make history by accepting the Presidential Freedom Award from the current president, Barack Obama in 2013. Maya Angelou is a spirit that this Earth will remember and cherish long after her sunset.
